My father purchased a used 1956 version of this model formally used by Lockheed
Burbank as a Facility Personnel Vehicle. He used it to take Boy Scout Troop 31
and 32 members on planned monthly caravan weekend camp outs.
This 1956 GMC Carryall Suburban is finished in Seminole Brown and
Dover White over a color-keyed interior, and it is powered by a
270ci inline-six backed by a column-shifted three-speed manual
transmission. Notice the hood in 1956 had a special logo element

The previous owner had the vehicle for about ten years, and the

Later, this became one of the first vehicles I drove on a regular basis
late and post Hollywood High School years. The model was outfitted with a
straight 6-cyl., single carburetor, 3-speed automatic transmission with the
shifter on the tree, back entry was a drop tailgate style as opposed to
side-by-side doors (similar model pictured above).

What a great and fun vehicle to have on summer nights to take in a
drive-in movie in Big Bear Lake. Yes, with the rear facing the screen,
bench seating removed, lying on a full mattress with plenty of
pillows.
Those experiences so beats up on this modern living experience of the
digital age - just lays it asunder.

The weekend of May 17, 2014 was a big one for Carroll Shelby
fans in the greater Los Angeles area.
The single day event took place at the new home of the Carroll Shelby Automotive Museum at 19021 S.
FigueoraStreet, Gardena,
California.It featured at least one
original example of the cars produced during the life of Carroll Shelby.
The only models that appeared to be absent
were the Toyota 2000 GT, and the Dodge powered Shelby’s. Did you realize that
Shelby had a hand in these?
Mr. Shelby’s children, Pat and Mike Shelby, were in attendance, along
with their spouses and children. They shared personal stories of their

Featured speakers included the legendary Bob Bondurant who
was a factory team driver and co-drove with Dan Gurney the 1964 Le Mans winning GT class Daytona Coupe; A.J. Baine a
journalist and author of “Go Like Hell”; Lucas Foster a film producer; Lynn
Park an avid Cobra collector and a close friend of the late Carroll Shelby; and
finally Aaron Shelby, Carroll Shelby’s grandson.The fans loved hearing the many stories from
these individuals.
The car show featured over 75 Ford and Shelby offerings
including authentic early and current Shelby American cars as well as some very
historic Cobras. The building which also
houses the Shelby American engine shop was full of the authentic Cobras while
the outside area contained all the old and current Shelby American offerings as
well as “replica” cars including, Cobras, Daytona Cobras, and a GT-40.

Those historic Cobras included the prototype 260 Cobra CSX2000
that was assembled during one long day and night in 1962 at Dean Moon’s shop in
Santa Fe Springs; CSX2005 another 260 Cobra was used exclusively by the Shelby
School of High Performance Driving located at Riverside Raceway; CSX2589 the
final 289 Cobra built, personally owned by Carroll Shelby until the time of his
death; and CSX2299 the 1964 Le Mans winning Daytona Cobra. For Cobra fans these
can be considered “holy” (images below).
This was a fun filled event and we can now look forward to
the 3rd Annual Tribute and car show next spring.
NOTE:The Carroll Hall Shelby Trust unveiled plans for the
new Carroll
Shelby Automotive Museum (CSAM) at a founder’s reception on May 16, 2014, in
Gardena, California. The museum is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization created to
educate the public about the high performance automotive industry. The CSAM is being formed by the Trust around the private collection of Mr. Shelby to celebrate
his legacy and to inspire future generations.

The Greatest Manufacturer Influence In Motorsports? MAZDA, Really ... MAZDA!
To the casual motorsports observer, it is easy to overlook the influence and participation automobile manufacturers have in the pursuit of motorsports and to what extent they shape and form activities that capture our attention on TV or our local track.
Once one learns how to drive, the concept of motosports competition crosses ones mind and, to some, becomes an obsession. For most, just beating someone off of the line at a green light on an everyday street is as deep as this interest goes, but for others, this obsession grows ... first by watching a major race like the INDY 500 or an international broadcast of the Formula 1 race from the Principality of Monaco to actually taking a car out on a track for a spin ... at speed.
We may first think about the manufacturer of a particular car as it relates to motorsports when we begin to recognize what the nameplate on the car is of our favorite driver. NASCAR is famous for sporting a manufacturers name on the cars they race, even though the cars they drive have almost nothing to do with the actual car one would see on any city or country street ... anywhere.
The cars that NASCAR use for competition are built from the ground up with tubular metal framing for the chassis, a combination of sheet metal and composite fiber outer panels for the body skin and decals located for where the head and tail lights are supposed to be. The names of Toyota, Ford, Chevy, Dodge adorn the cars but very little in the way of actual production vehicles are really a part of the process.
In other, more sophisticated forms of motorsports found on the racing venues around the world, automobile manufacturers do, in fact, give direct support with engineering, engine development, and actual platform creation development, and support. However, no other automobile manufacturer participates directly in the creation and development of competitive racing series, driver development and training around the world more than ... MAZDA.
At the beginning of this summer's racing season, the largest gathering of MAZDA motorsports racing series drivers from all of the supported series (pictured here at New Jersey Motorsports Park, June 2009) - Mazda is the brand of choice for road-racers across North America. More than 9,000 grassroots racers compete in various classes with the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and the National Auto Sport Association (NASA). Racers who are years away from earning a driver's license can now begin their professional motorsports careers in the Mazda family. A driver can begin in karts and progress through the Skip Barber series, Club Racing Formula Mazda, professional Star Mazda and finally to Formula Atlantic, all with Mazda. MAZDA CONNECTS THE DOTS FOR NORTH AMERICAN MOTORSPORTS LADDER
Up-and-coming race drivers have two major challenges: winning on the track, and finding the resources to move up to the next level. Mazda in conjunction with series corporate partners is making the second task significantly easier for this year's champion drivers. Mazda will provide a next-level, fully-funded ride in a Mazda powered car to the 2007 champions of selected Mazda series.
