A2Z Clinches 2012 SCCA Vintage F5000 Championship
A2Z Clinches 2012 SCCA Vintage F5000 Championship
A rain and crash shortened F5000 feature produced a win for Vintage F5000 driver Seb Coppola in class A, Jim Stengel in class B and a second overall F5000 championship for Tony “A2Z” Adamowicz and the Riverside International Automotive Museum (RIAM) 1969 Eagle Mk5 F5000 car, yesterday at the Glenora Wine Cellars U.S. Vintage Grand Prix event at the legendary Watkins Glen circuit.
The F5000 group started behind Indy Lights racers in staggered time as it wouldn’t be long before the powerful 5.0 liter Formula A cars would swallow the smaller cars on the 3.4 mile Upstate New York road course.
Coppola made a great start and held the lead in his 1970 Lola T-192 as Adamowicz, who got caught up in a near miss in the bus stop chicane, made up time from his position at the back of the grid. The race was then full course yellow as one of the Indy Lights cars crashed heavily at the end of the front straight.
“The Eagle ran well, despite most of the race being under full course yellow. I couldn’t race or pass anyone,” complained Adamowicz.
According to RIAM crew chief, Bill Losee, “They threw a Green/White flag unexpectedly--which caught everyone off guard. Tony never really got a chance to really put the power down and race. Regardless, we are happy about the overall championship.”
Losee and RIAM Principal, Doug Magnon are now off to Goodwood in the UK for the famed revival with a Dan Gurney-built and raced 1966 Indy Eagle.
In the B Group, Jim Stengel, driving a 1973 McRae GM1 raced to the head of the pack early and coasted to an overall win.

Adamowicz, claimed the 2012 Vintage F5000 Championship for RIAM in the same Eagle Mk 5 Racing Car he drove to win the 1969 Championship and the 2011 Vintage F5000 championship.
Watkins Glen is one of North America’s premiere road racing facilities, dating back to 1955. “The Glen” hosted Formula One from 1961 until 1980 and SCCA Formula 5000 from 1972 to 1976.
The Historic Formula 5000 Association contests several races each year starring the cars--and sometimes drivers--who made the 1969-1976 American series one of SCCA’s most exciting series ever.

Tweeting The Glen 2010 - IZOD IndyCar Series Race #9
Team Penske drivers Helio Castroneves and Ryan Briscoe had combined to win the first five poles since the IndyCar Series began racing at the storied road course in upstate New York's Finger Lakes region, but neither had delivered a victory.
This year, the stage is set for either a Penske win in a big way or a colossal failure in that Team Penske has placed all three drivers in the top three spots on the grid. ChampCar transition driver Will Power, in his first full season ride with Penske racing, who has won two of the eight races run this year, captured the pole for this year's running of the Camping World Grand Prix at Watkin's Glen.
This excerpted and edited from IndyCar.com -
Will Power, the Mario Andretti Road Course Championship points leader, won the PEAK Performance Pole Award for the fifth time this season with a lap of 1 minute, 29.3164 seconds on the 3.4-mile, 11-turn circuit during the Firestone Fast Six shootout.
Teammate Helio Castroneves (1:29.4609) was second – the first time this season a team has swept the front row – while Ryan Briscoe (1:29.9346) and reigning series champion Dario Franchitti will share Row 2. Team Penske started 1-2-3 at Edmonton in '09.
Takuma Sato made his third Firestone Fast Six appearance in the No. 5 Lotus KV Racing Technology car and will be on the third row with defending race winner Justin Wilson in the No. 22 Z-Line Designs car for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing.
The top six were separated by less than a second. Six different teams are represented on the first three rows.

NASCAR - Bristol: Johnson notches first win, attendance down

NASCAR - Bristol: Johnson notches first win, attendance down
With all of the winning Jimmie Johnson has been doing over these last four years, with consecutive national championships and now three wins in five races to begin a fifth year with few challenges from the forty car plus field ... in his 17 career races at the famed short-track at Bristol, Tennessee, Johnson has nine top-10 finishes but yesterday marked his first victory at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Further, with this victory, Jimmie Johnson became one of just 12 drivers to score 50 or more career victories and now there are only five active tracks Johnson has not won on: Michigan, Infineon, Watkins Glen, Chicagoland and Homestead.
With all of this winning the #48 car has had over these last four PLUS years, it is hard to find anything wrong except for this one troubling fact, after 55 sellout NASCAR Cup events at the Bristol track, the attendance was down at the Food City 500. The Bristol Motor Speedway can accommodate 160,000 and yesterday's attendance was NASCAR estimated to be 138,000.
The speedway’s record streak of 55 sellouts began back in August 1982 – when the track could accommodate a mere 30,000 fans.

NASCAR: Empty Seat Syndrome Even at Bristol
By Sandra MacWatters - 3-21-2010
The contagion of empty seats at racing venues appears to have migrated from California to Bristol, Tennessee.
NASCAR depends on fans. Sponsors suffer when fans don't attend races and television viewership drops.
The average NASCAR fan must budget for attending a race. Going to an event might equate to a mortgage payment for the family home.
----
Lowered attendance cause the dominoes to fall with local businesses suffering due to reduced influx of fans.
----
During the Sprint Cup race at Bristol, Darrell Waltrip commented on air about the weather keeping fans away from the track. Weather was an unlikely suspect in the low attendance. Most people come to the track for the Nationwide race and the Sprint Cup race. It was bright and sunny for the Saturday race.
The stands were probably only sixty percent filled for the Nationwide race at Bristol.
----
There are those who say the COT [Car Of Tomorrow standardization] has dampened attendance. The wing will be gone in Martinsville making the Cup cars look more normalized.
The "let the boys have at it" will continue to play out. Hopefully it will bring about the anticipated fan attention.
Another camp of people believe Jimmie Johnson's winning ways have been a downer for the supporters of other drivers. He has won three out of the five races this season so far.
It just may take the return of Dale Earnhardt Jr. to competitive, perhaps winning ways to offset the Johnson tedium and get the fans back in the stands.
----
We can hope the economy and employment levels will rebound to improve the situation at hand.
One still has to wonder if all the people who stay away from the races will be watching on television.
For the sake of all concerned, hopefully the spread of empty seat syndrome won't become epidemic.

Locked & Loaded - PCM Rejoins The Fray At Watkins Glen
Mario Dominguez and the team of Pacific Coast Motorsports Racing will return to IndyCar Series action for 2008 this weekend at Watkins Glen International.
PCM last competed at Texas Motor Speedway where Dominguez started 24th and finished 21st in the 28-car field. The team remained at their Southern California, Ventura County-based headquarters throughout the month of June to prepare for the remainder of their modified season. This activity included becoming more familiar with the Dallara chassis and building a back-up car for competition.
This weekend’s Camping World Grand Prix will be Mario’s first time on the historic track, but the PCM team is familiar with the venue, they raced there twice in 2006 while competing in the Rolex Grand Am series, and earned two top-ten finishes. They finished eighth in the sprint race and 10th in the six-hour event.
It is interesting to note that Dominguez scored 11 of his Champ Car podiums on road or street courses.
Dominguez will arrive at Watkins Glen from Edmonton , Alberta , Canada on Thursday. A “transition” driver from Champ Car, Dominguez has two top-ten finishes, including a fifth Rexall Grand Prix’s at the Edmonton City Centre Airport and spent the day Wednesday promoting next month’s event.
"I am so excited to race at Watkins Glen. It is a track that I have always wanted to compete on and I always hoped I would get the opportunity.", said Mario Dominguez this week.

"We’ve spent the last week strengthening our program and I’ve been training up to three hours everyday, so we are ready for our return to IndyCar action.", Mario continued.
"The last time we were on a road/street circuit we finished on the podium, which was at the Champ Car finale in Long Beach in April. Even though we’ve been racing on ovals most recently, I’ve logged hundreds of miles on my go-kart practice the road course techniques.
We are certainly hoping for and planning for a successful weekend in the Visit Mexico City car.".
So are we, here at The EDJE, Mario, so are we.
At Watkins Glen ... it is back to full strength for the "T-Team Ten"!
