Robert Wickens & Mark Wilkins Form All-Canadian IMSA TCR Challenge By Bryan Herta Autosport

This is the year to look for the No. 33 Elantra N TCR fielded by Hyundai through their very successful multi-year partnership with Bryan Herta Autosport (BHA) racing the full season in the IMSA sanctioned Michelin Pilot Challenge season, starting at Daytona International Speedway with a January 28, 2022. 

Reason? 

It has been nearly three and a half years that the very promising career of Canadian Robert Wickens came to what appeared to be an end through a crippling INDYCAR accident at Pocono Raceway on August 19, 2018. Robert (Robbie) Wickens and fellow Canadian Mark Wilkins will be teaming up to campaign in a specially prepared Hyundai Elantra N duel-outfitted with foot and hand controls for accelerating and braking.

For Wickens, a custom hand-control system designed by BHA technical director David Brown and development technician Jonathan Gormley refined from a system originally designed for Michael Johnson, the only hand-controlled requirement licensed driver in the INDYCAR sanctioning body. For Mark Wilkins, foot pedals.


Bryan Herta Autosport has been in a working relationship for approximately eighteen months with Robert, tracking his rehabilitation progress, gave him a test track day with the specially outfitted Veloster N TCR at Mid-Ohio road course, to come to this day which announced a full season challenge for 2022. Here is the ZOOM Call announcement hosted by IMSA with about 50 motor press participants online.

Robert Wickens will return to racing with Bryan Herta Autosport, starting at Daytona

Wickens has major aspirations in joining a six-car team that has won three consecutive championships in the MPC, vowing to win the season opener despite having yet to drive the car yet.

“Aim big, right,” he said with a smile during a Zoom news conference Friday. “Let’s go for the win. It’s not every day you can jump straight in with a team that’s won multiple championships with a teammate that’s won a championship. I feel I couldn’t be in a better place. The goal is simple: to try to win the thing.

“I felt I was forced to leave in 2018 at almost the peak of my career. I felt great. Never felt fitter, never felt stronger. I felt like I was driving the best I’ve ever driven. I want to hit the ground running and continue where I left off. At least challenge for a victory and podium, if anything.”

It was his first exposure to hand controls mounted on the steering wheel that controlled the acceleration and braking of the No. 54 Veloster N TCR. Michael Johnson, a paralyzed driver who delivered Hyundai’s first podium with co-driver Stephen Simpson in a 2021 Michelin Pilot Challenge race at Daytona, helped guide Wickens through the use of hand controls.

Wickens also had watched Alex Zanardi race with hand controls in the DTM and sports cars series (including the 2019 Rolex 24 at Daytona). Zanardi was among the first to call after Wickens was paralyzed.

Wickens said Friday that he can stand with support but likely won’t walk again.

“I’m at the point where my recovery has more or less plateaued in terms of neural recovery,” he said. “I’m not regaining any more muscle function. Unfortunately, it’s looking like I’ll be in a chair for the remainder of my life as long as modern medicine and science stay what it is. But it’s a great life. I was able to regain a lot of function.”

For the past two seasons, Wickens has worked as a consultant and driver coach for Arrow McLaren SP, the team he drove for during his rookie season in the NTT IndyCar Series up until the Pocono crash.

Wickens said he will remain in the consultant role for Arrow McLaren SP during the 2022 season. Asked whether he wanted to race the Indy 500 again, Wickens said he is keeping his options open.

“The first thing for me is I want to race here in the Michelin Pilot Challenge with Hyundai in my Elantra N TCR car to just, for myself, prove I can do it again,” he said. “It’s almost like a proof of concept to understand the hand controls and compete again. I haven’t raced in three and a half years, really. Just for myself and everyone around me, I want to know I can do it again. Once we can tick that box, nothing is out of the question.

“I think it would be awesome to race the Indy 500. Also, I’m very interested in exploring new avenues. I’ve never really done any sports car driving. Racing at the highest levels of IMSA and the WeatherTech Series. Those LMDh cars just look insane. Formula E is something that’s very appealing to me as well. I’m interested in exploring other options of motorsport outside IndyCar.”

Wickens cast doubt on if he could race again in the NTT IndyCar Series because of regulations that could limit hand controls.

“Anything is possible with the right time, money and resources,” he said. “It’s a colossal ask, but I’m at a point in my life where if I never return to IndyCar, I’m very satisfied with that. I’m really looking forward to this opportunity I have here to get back behind the wheel and feel that hunger I’ve had for so many years watching from the sidelines.

“If things in the future arise, we’ll address them as they come. For the time being, I don’t see IndyCar as a feasible option in my return. The physicality to adapt my hand controls would require a lot of customization that I’m not sure the series would really sign off on. Braking, power steering. It would take like a one-off Indy car, which I don’t know if teams would agree to (allow).”

In all of the world, given the nature and accomplishment of Bryan Herta Autosport (BHA) through building its team with Hyundai over the last five years, and the physiological and psychological come back of Robert Wickens (paired with Mark Wilkins), there can not be a better match up for success in this motorsports competition re-entry.

The season kicks off Jan. 21 with the Roar Before the Rolex 24, a three-day test session at Daytona that concludes with qualifying races. The BMW M Endurance Challenge streams live starting at 1:35 p.m. ET Friday, Jan. 28 on Peacock.

A New Age Begins As Robert Wickens Gets Behind The Controls Of A Real IMSA Racecar

Hat's off to IMSA, Bryan Herta Autosport, Hyundai, and the specially prepared No. 54 Michelin Pilot Challenge Veloster N TCR control-outfitted for 28 year old Michael Johnson. Michael was the first and only paralyzed driver licensed by INDYCAR, before making the switch to sportscar racing beginning in 2016 - so, this "track day" is a serious thing for Robert Wickens.

A time was set-up to give Robert this first return opportunity on the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course race track after going through a regime of rehabilitation for nearly 1,000 days since his debilitating INDYCAR accident at Pocono Raceway on August 19, 2018.

In Robert Wickens way of thinking, there was very little doubt this day would come in the racecar life he continues to pursue with admirable passion.

In review, Canadian Wickens’ stellar NTT INDYCAR SERIES 2018 debut season featured a pole position, and four podium finishes in addition to the Indy 500 Rookie of the Year title. Having transitioned back to North America from Europe where he was a Formula One test and reserve driver, Wickens’ INDYCAR career looked set for championship contention. After Pocono, however, Wickens suffered a thoracic spinal fracture, spinal cord injury, neck fracture, tibia and fibula fractures to both legs, fractures in both hands, a fractured right forearm, fractured elbow, a concussion, four fractured ribs and a pulmonary contusion in the incident.

Through his relentless regimen of rehabilitation and therapy, Wickens has become a trailblazer in developing new technology and treatment methods for the spinal cord injury community.

Tuesday, halfway through a full day test, Robert Wickens sat down for a ZOOM Call with motorsports media to share his thoughts and reflections for all who have followed his productive exploits.

Moderator:
It's been a long wait for you to get here, but how did it feel to get back in and feel a race car on a racetrack?

Robert Wickens:
It's been great. I mean, honestly, first off, thanks for coming everybody. It's been an amazing day so far. I mean, the weather hasn't been super kind to us. It was a little damp to begin with. It rained overnight and it's been changeable all day, but, nevertheless, it's been just a blast and I honestly can't thank Bryan Herta Autosport, Hyundai, and Michael Johnson (enough). It's not everyday that someone can lend you a race car to go take an item off your bucket list. So, it's been a great day so far.

Moderator:
How many laps did you run so far and what are the plans for the rest of the day for you? Are you done for the day? Are you getting back in?

Robert Wickens:
Yeah, to be honest, I wish I had a proper number for you on how many laps I've done, but I would say I'm around 25ish laps for the morning. Yeah, it's been, been a lot of fun and I hope to get back in the afternoon. I haven't really had a chance to talk with the team again. So, I just got out of the car and had a bite to eat and then been up here. So, we're gonna see what we can do. I know it's raining a little bit again right now, but, you know, I've always liked racing in the rain as well, so it should be, it should be good fun.

Question:
Hey, Robbie, welcome back. I know it's been quite a journey for you to get here but you promised us when this journey began that you would get back in a race car and today you lived up on that promise. So in many ways, how fulfilled do you feel about today?

Robert Wickens:
I mean, I feel there was a lot of emotions. I think once I was able to put my visor down and get back on a racetrack again, you know, the whole week up leading to this, it wasn't so much nerves. There was a lot of excitement and anticipation for this. And then once I put a suit on again and started putting in the earpieces, balaclava, the helmet, it just all went out the window and it was just like business as usual. Once I got back out on track, it was a slightly different story. You know, obviously the hand controls that Michael Johnson uses and the Hyundai Veloster is brand new for me. So learning that on a wet track, it wasn't without its difficulties, but we took it step by step and slowly chipped away at getting quicker and quicker.

Question:
And how are the hand controls? Because you've been trained as a race driver to do certain things, especially at a track like Mid-Ohio that you're familiar with, to now all of a sudden reeducate yourself to use your hands instead of what you were able to do before.

Robert Wickens:
Yeah, I think that that's the hard thing with accessibility is, you know, there's no textbook on it. It's not like the gas is on the right and the brake's on the left like every car, almost in existence. You know, with this, there's been a lot of people in the past that have raced with disabilities. You know, you have Billy Monger, you have Alex Zanardi, you have Michael Johnson here in the IMSA Pilot series. They all have different systems and they're all very successful at what they're doing. Michael's system here is, there's a ring on the front of the steering wheel that you push for throttle. And then there's another ring on the backside of the steering wheel that you pull in for brake, which I think is a great system. Having everything within fingers reach on the steering wheel has been pretty good so far. But yeah, like you said, it's a really steep learning curve and there's been a lot of mental focus, I guess, goes into it, trying to program in, you know, preplan what I'm doing with my hands before I get to the next corner. It's slowly starting to take shape where I'm having to think less and less about it.

Question:
Back to your day job, you work a lot with the young kids over at Arrow McLaren. One of them did pretty well on Sunday. What's your reaction to what Pato was able to do? Finally got his first victory.

Robert Wickens:
I mean, with, with Pato is a long time coming. I think he's had three, maybe four second-places so far in his IndyCar career. And he's been so close so many times. I see a lot of myself in him in terms of he's doing so many things, right. And it's in an IndyCar, especially in any professional form of motorsport, you have to do the little things well, and it's the things that go unnoticed to the visual eye. You know, like your in-laps, your out-laps, stopping on the marks in the pit stops, your attention to detail. That's what wins you races at an elite level. It's never, as we say in the Arrow McLaren SP camp, you know, you have to do the not so sexy stuff well. Which is basically those in-laps and out-laps and those little parts of the game that can make the difference.

Question:
Robbie, congrats, man. That's awesome. So what are the plans here? I mean, moving forward, is this going to turn into something that is more full-time?

Robert Wickens:
I mean, I wish I could give you guys a bit more insight, but at the moment there's, there's no real prospects. It's just a great opportunity that, that Bryan Herta and Hyundai were able to present me with this track day. And I jumped on the opportunity, you know, I've been wanting to drive a race car for a long time now. And to finally tick that box is massive in my recovery and my journey back. Who knows what the future will bring, but I don't want to get too far ahead of myself. And I just want to take today for really what it is.

Question:
All right. So for not pushing the future too much, I have to ask, you know, with what Hyundai and Bryan Herta Autosport have done here, plus what you had mentioned off the top, what we've seen the likes of Zanardi, Billy Monger, Michael Johnson do here, could something like the Indy 500 now be in the cards?

Robert Wickens:
I mean, I was never really ruling it out to begin with. I mean, I think the biggest thing for me is, the hardest thing of my injury was, I felt like I was just hitting the peak of my career and my abilities when this happened. We're creeping up on three years now since the accident. And I feel like I'm not utilizing those prime years of my career. I would love nothing more than to get back at an elite level. And sure. I mean, selfishly, I would love to get back to IndyCar to close that chapter of my life on my own terms. You know, I think everyone can kind of relate, you know, if for whatever reasons, if something happens that you weren't really planning, sometimes it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. I would love nothing more ideally, you know, to win an IndyCar race and then maybe move on. But, you know, I think right now, there's so much to figure out. I mean, I think at the early stages of my recovery, I really wanted to return to IndyCar. I'm not saying I don't now, but understanding what goes into accessibility. And I think making an IndyCar competitive with hand controls would be a massive undertaking. One that maybe with the current IndyCar regulations wouldn't be entirely feasible. So, you know, but never say never. There's a lot of great teams out there, and I honestly think crazier things have happened in the past, but for the time being, I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing, focusing on my rehab and hopefully, finally in due time, the right opportunity will come.

Question:
I realize you don't want to mess up Michael Johnson's setups at all. But how easy is it to kind of like tailor and customize those hand controls for yourself? For example, if you wanted to make the brakes less sensitive or more sensitive or the throttle response, is it easy to address?

Robert Wickens:
Ah, I'm still learning the system myself, but honestly I think, there's definitely, probably some tunability. I know with the hand control system that Michael Johnson uses in the Veloster, there's like a hydraulic big booster, like brake booster to help generate the pressure on the brake. And there's a tuning aspect to that for if I want the brake more sensitive or not so sensitive. And, Stephen Simpson, who is Michael Johnson's co-driver or other driver not co-driver, but a teammate. There it is. He does a great job of shaking down the car. So he was actually first in today and set up the brakes with what he believes Michael would have liked for me to try. You know, and then once the track started to dry out a little bit, we were talking a little bit and we changed the brakes a little bit again, once, you know, the track was getting a bit grippier and stuff like that. He's been a great asset today with getting me up to speed along with Michael himself. I've been bouncing a lot of ideas and a lot of questions off of him and it's been a really good day, but I think in terms of customization, I'm, I'm new to the IMSA world, but I believe the system is entirely homologated. So I think you can't really do a whole lot of customizations without homologating a new system.


Question:
As far as feel is concerned, obviously, a lot of drivers will say there's not just the visual or the feel through the steering while also feeling through your backside as well. Do you get still get those same sensations that you did before you accident and how difficult is it for you to kind of like switch to like a front wheel drive car?

Robert Wickens:
Yeah, I mean, in terms of transitioning to front wheel drive, it's been entirely seamless. If I didn't know it was front wheel drive, I probably wouldn't have found out for a long time until I had an understeer on exit that was a bit unique in the rain. I was like, 'Oh yeah, there's the front wheel drive.' But honestly, the Hyundai Veloster, it's an amazing little car, you know, I didn't really know what to expect. I've heard great things of, like a TCR car and the series itself, but it's a lot of fun to drive. It's very well balanced in the rain so far. It's been, yeah, it's been a pleasure to get up to speed with it, but in terms of sensation, there's definitely been moments that I've been maybe caught off guard by something, but it's more so what I'm doing with the brake pedal, you know, as most of, you know, braking is like 90 percent of motorsport. And, you know, I've had some like slight oversteer sliding moments that were related to the brake that I didn't realize I was maybe braking as much as I was and had a small oversteer from that. But it wasn't really, I think I'm having some pretty good sensation. I'm able to slide the car around and stuff like that. And I'm feeling kind of a bit what the car is doing, which, you know, obviously my first time back in a race car, you always wonder what that sensation is going to be like, but so far it seems to be there.

Question:
Robert, a few of us got to actually watch you today and stuff, and it seemed like every lap you took, you seemed a little smoother, a little smoother. Did it feel like that in the car? And did you get to the point where you had a little bit of a, I don't know, for want of another term, a thrill factor?

Robert Wickens:
Yeah, for sure. I mean, there was one stage there where it really started to dry out, when we were able to put slicks on for a few laps and it took a while to get them warmed up and get them going. Cause it was really like half wet, half dry conditions. But you can't, I mean, I did a lap that I pit right after it. Cause I was just like, I feel like if I don't like take a breather here, I might take things a little too far. So it's been a lot of fun so far, but it's been such a big learning curve and the cool thing is I've been able to drive this car and almost every condition here at Mid-Ohio. It's been, we started the day in pretty heavy rain conditions and then it's been a constant evolution and drying out throughout the day. So yeah, I've been able to experience kind of full wet and intermediate crossover to dry. It's like it's been a fun little day so far.

Question:
I was going to say in your mind when you're thinking, well, of course there's going to be a little bit of rain today. You know what I mean? Your first time back in a race car, et cetera, it's almost like they're putting you through it. I was talking with Bryan during a break there and what is the sensation that you need to get to? Like you were talking about the braking, for example, it seemed like you got smoother as the session went, but what is that sensation you've really got to get to where you feel, for want of another term competent again?

Robert Wickens:
Oh man, that's a loaded question. You know, I mean, ultimately, there really isn't one aspect to it. You know, I want to keep looking at the telemetry, try to look at onboards, but between the other drivers here at this track day and, and to improve myself slowly. I mean, I haven't had a chance really, to look at the data from my last run to see how I can improve to go forward. But I'm sure, like I touched on at the beginning, braking's probably one of the low hanging fruits of trying to find lap time right now. But I'm at the stage right now in my progression in this car today that I need to see that telemetry. I need some coaching basically on, on how to get the most out of this Veloster.

Question:
Hey, real quick, one more quickie, watching you pull out and stuff. Can you go through the procedure? You've got a clutch, you got a clutch lever, right? You have shift paddles, right? You gotta go through the procedure of just getting going so people can understand what you're doing there.

Robert Wickens:
Yeah. So, uh, it's a bit busy. So basically we have a lever to the right of the cockpit. That's the clutch. So normally obviously people have a pedal clutch, mine's a hand operated clutch. So I need to pull in the clutch select first gear and then use the throttle on the steering wheel to leave like you normally would. All while trying to not hit mechanics and other things as I drive off. So you know, I think honestly, that's one of the more complicated things is when the car is stationary. I think once you're moving, it's pretty seamless. But, you have, you need one more set of hands, I think to leave smoothly.

Question:
Hi there. Thanks so much for the time again today, Robbie. I know you mentioned that you felt like an IndyCar return might be a little bit farther off or just more complicated to put together, given regulations and everything right now. What would you feel like a realistic timeline would be if you got an opportunity from the right team in IMSA to make a comeback. I mean, would you with the right amount of testing feel potentially comfortable trying to put something together for next year? Is that something that you're even focused on right now?

Robert Wickens:
I mean, absolutely. I mean, I've not been shy to admit that I want to return to an elite category again and to continue my journey and my career. I mean, no one has a crystal ball, but first and foremost, I think getting up and running comes with finance. Unfortunately, that's the motorsports world. That's what we live in. It doesn't matter if that's IndyCar, if it's Formula E, if it's IMSA, you know, I think getting up and running with the hand controls, I would like to make some small, personal changes to hand controls to better suit maybe what I would want. But, you know, I think at the end of the day, first and foremost, finances is the first hurdle and once we can get up and running, then we kinda have the whole world at our disposal. But at the moment, it's pretty tough to get started.

Question:
What kind of timeline brought this together? I mean, was this something that has been in the works with Bryan and his team for a while now? Is it something that kind of came together last minute? How long have you known that this could be a possibility?

Robert Wickens:
I would say a bit of both. Bryan approached me a few months ago and basically we were just chatting and he asked if I'd ever want to drive a race car again. I said, 'Of course.' And then that was kind of it for a little bit. And then things started to slowly come together one step at a time. And then he was able to let me know that Hyundai was doing a track day here at Mid-Ohio. And there was an opportunity for me to drive Michael Johnson's Veloster and it was kind of the perfect opportunity, just great timing, really, you know. IMSA's here in a couple of weeks and, you know, they're doing their program to get things ready for the upcoming race and I'm just kinda hanging out in the background and just having fun.

Question:
One last one, I know you took part in the IndyCar iRacing Challenge last spring, when we had the pause for the series due to the pandemic and you had a pretty, pretty solid success in that first race. I know a sim race and actually driving the car is very different, but maybe kind of take me through what you had to check off between April of last year and now to get to the point where you were either ready or cleared, or comfortable actually getting back in a race car.

Robert Wickens:
Yeah. I mean, I think first and foremost, you know, I have to get a lot of thanks to Simcraft, because they were able to provide me with a simulator at home, which was really the first step on this road back. I was able to compete again, like you said, even though it was virtual, I was able to kind of feel that competition again and to improve. And not only that we were able to evolve the hand controls to something that I'm very comfortable with on a simulator at home. The irony is that's not what I'm driving here today in the Veloster, but nevertheless, just getting more used to using your hands, you know, was massive for me. So yeah, it's been, it's been amazing, but yeah, just it's been, been a blast.
In addition to the IndyCar iRacing series, you also did made some appearances in the IMSA iRacing Pro Series last year. Were you in the one that we had at Mid-Ohio?

Robert Wickens:
No, I did Road America, I did Watkins and I believe, VIR.

Robert Wickens:
So, I'm also doing Road Atlanta this Thursday. So I'm making my IMSA virtual comeback.

You heard it here first folks.

Question:
Thanks for joining us. Really appreciate it. I just wondered, you know, you kind of, as a driver coming up through, you're kind of trained not to feel any emotion when you're behind the wheel, and that's kind of like a prerequisite of being able to battle against your rivals. I just wonder kind of what you felt today on the first lap going into Turn 1. If you let yourself kind of have a moment there, or if there was any kind of a real feeling of realization of what you'd actually achieved just by testing today in itself.

Robert Wickens:
To be honest, there wasn't. You know, there was so much going through my head on, like, what I'm doing with my hands that I really don't think I thought of a single emotion apart from making sure I was pulling the right thing to stop the car. You know, I think that was the priority. I mean, as you guys know, Mid-Ohio Turn 1's a pretty daunting corner. So, going up to that the first time in the wet with an entire system that I've never used before, it was definitely daunting. But I definitely, I took baby steps and took it nice and slow, you know, I didn't want to be the hero on lap one. And yeah, I think, we progressed nicely throughout the morning and I'm looking forward to getting back in the car here in a little bit.

Question:
Hey Robbie, it's great to see you back in the car. What surprised you the most in getting back behind the wheel today?

Robert Wickens:
I think the thing that surprised me the most was how mighty that Hyundai Veloster is. Honestly, it's a really fun car. And just to have the opportunity, I was really happy that I got a run in on slicks at the end, before I took my lunch break here to come up and speak to you friendly people. But yeah, it's the fact that, you know, in the rain, it was very well balanced. Mid-Ohio Is not an easy track here in the wet. It's very slippery, very low grip and no room for error anywhere. But it handled it well, you know, the brakes are strong, the cornering speed, everything. I was very blown away by actually how quick this car is. I'm not trying to discredit what it was, but, you know, I was very pleasantly surprised with how much of a real race car it is.

Question:
You mentioned there's still a lot to figure out moving forward into the future, but what are the long-term goals that you're looking at now that you've gotten this chance to get behind the wheel?

Robert Wickens:
Yeah, I mean, I think long-term goals for me, haven't changed. I want to return to an elite level of motorsport again. It's been really since day zero of my recovery and we're still chipping away. This is a massive step in my journey back, but that's really all that is here today. Unfortunately, there's nothing really in the pipeline, because of that, but you know, I'm going to keep doing what I can keep working hard and I believe that hard work always pays off. And I believe I deserve to still race at a high level and at an elite level. And hopefully that can come true sometime soon.

Question:
You mentioned the recovery and the road you've taken to get to this point. What's been the toughest part of that recovery?

Robert Wickens:
There's been many, there's been many tough times. I mean, I think, something that a lot of people, try not to talk about, but the mental health aspect of a recovery like this is extremely daunting. That's been really one of the biggest struggles. I think a lot of people can put in the manual work and then to try and get better and get stronger, but to do it day in and day out and keep a positive outlook, it's extremely, extremely tough. And, you know, then there's the whole different world of emotions that come through, you know, then you go through different phases of your recovery and it's the mental aspect has been hands down the hardest thing of this recovery. And I've had a great support system. I have a lovely partner with my wife that has always had my back and has always been there for me. But then even from family, from friends, from colleagues, you know, I'm so fortunate to have such a great surrounding around me within the motorsports community that I really, I feel sometimes I don't know how I got so lucky to have such a great support system around me.

Question:
Hey, Robbie, just want to throw one more in. You were talking about your support system to be able to have Sam Schmidt involved. I mean, nobody can relate to what you're going through any better than Sam Schmidt. And how important of a role has he had in helping you through this mental aspect of it.

Robert Wickens:
You know, Sam was very good for us at the beginning of the injury. You know, obviously he had experienced everything there is with, with paralysis. So at the beginning of all this, he was able to answer a lot of questions that we had, he was able to help us when we were discussing what would be the best rehab facility to try to go to. So just to have that person to bounce questions and names of doctors and this, like, he's just very well connected within the industry. Yeah, I mean, I think in that stages, he was definitely very helpful.

Question:
Thank you. Great to see it back, Robbie. And I just have one question. Everybody else asked pretty much the questions that I would ask. You mentioned Formula E . Have you been in touch with anybody at Formula E? You know, your old pal Toto Wolff. Mercedes has got a team in that series, maybe the regulations, particularly, as far your situation are a little different. In any event, have you talked to anybody there about possibly getting involved?

Robert Wickens:
You know, I mean, yeah. Luckily I was able to end my relationship with Mercedes on very good terms. And Toto has been a regular person that I've been able to lean on throughout my recovery. Whether it be him coming to visit me when I was in the hospital still in Indianapolis to just kind of monthly or bi-monthly phone calls to check in, to see how everyone's doing. You know, he's such a great person. With that being said, there, there is no formal discussions with any Formula E teams. I mean, I would love the opportunity, but you know, right now at the moment, I think that that's a great championship, especially for accessibility given the advances in the technology that they have at their disposal there.

Question:
Hey, Robbie just wanted to follow up. So, you know, support systems on at any point, did you ever talk with like Alex Zanardi after say the 24 hours of Daytona or even, or even going longer for that, for that matter?

Robert Wickens:
I have actually. Yeah. I mean the whole support system in motorsports is phenomenal. You know, the amount of drivers that reached out to me and have talked to me, I'm sure a lot of sports are the same, but it's been amazing. And Alex was one of the first people to reach out to me. Once I was ready to take phone calls and you know, we immediately started talking shop and talking about what I needed to go racing again. And he gave me a lot of very good feedback on his experiences. Same with Billy. And not even that, like Trevor Carlin, who is the team boss for Billy, I was able to pick his brain on more of a technical aspect of what Billy used. But then, you know, every injury has its own kind of unique fix. So a lot of the things that they were using actually wouldn't work for me for example, but it's still very interesting to hear what they did and how they fixed or got around their problems.

Gabby Chaves Joins Bryan Herta Autosport's 2015 VICS Season

Gabby Chaves Joins Bryan Herta Autosport's 2015 VICS Season

Yesterday, the Verizon IndyCar Series held a joint teleconference call interview with Bryan Herta, owner of  Bryan Herta Autosport IndyCar race team and race car driver Gabby Chaves.

Bryan Herta Autosport (BHA) is keen on bringing along talented and accomplished drivers who are working their way up through Mazda supported IndyCar Ladder series when looking for the most talented driver to drive their car for the season.

Last year, BHA tapped 2012 Star Mazda series champion and IndyLights standout Jack Hawksworth with some success, especially at the series' premiere venue, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In the inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis on the Speedway's road course, series rookie Jack Hawksworth, who had earned his first front-row start, led a field-high 31 laps and finished seventh. British born Hawksworth finished in the points ahead of such recognizably named drivers as Takuma Sato and Graham Rahal.

This year, BHA decided to go to this well again with its signing of 2014 IndyLights champion and past Star Mazda series standout, Colombian born Gabby Chaves to a full season in the Verizon IndyCar Series.

One of Bryan Herta's immortal moments as a driver came in 1996 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca when Alex Zanardi decided, on the last lap, that the only way he was going to win a race the two drivers were contesting was to cut the driving line through the last half of the infamous "Corkscrew" chicane turn. No one on the conference call was willing to bring this up in light of the announcement that Brian Barnhart was once again named Director of Race Control which would have changed the very nature of the conversation. Brian Barnhart believes that judgements on what a proper driving line is should be made, and penalties enforced, on a road or street course ... but this is another discussion having nothing to do with a season driver announcement.

What should be noted though, Bryan Herta Autosport won the 2011 Indianapolis 500 with driver Dan Wheldon. It is with this background the following teleconference call was held by the Verizon IndyCar Series, with several media writers including The EDJE on the line, with Bryan Herta, owner of  Bryan Herta Autosport IndyCar race team and 2015 team race car driver Gabby Chaves.

 TRANSCRIPT

THE MODERATOR:  Welcome, everyone, to today's IndyCar conference call.

Yesterday morning Bryan Herta Autosport announced that 2014 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires champion Gabby Chavez will pilot its No. 98 Honda for the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series season. 

We're pleased to be joined today by Bryan Herta and his new driver Gabby Chavez. 
Bryan, give us a little insight on how this agreement came about and what sort of impression you have of Gabby and your experience with him thus far. 

BRYAN HERTA:  I mean, obviously the impression was good.  It really started with some conversations a few months back and evolved to agreeing to go do a test at Sebring in December to get to know each other.  I'd say that went really well on and off the track.  Gabby was highly recommended.  Obviously his credentials in Indy Lights speak for themselves. 

For us, we've seen from recent past that the guys who have been coming out of Indy Lights into IndyCar have been doing a great job.  We had a good experience with Jack Hawksworth coming out of Indy Lights.  Gabby was obviously right from day one a very competitive driver.  It was just a case of how can we put a deal together. 

We worked very hard to get everything together and we're pleased to go racing together this season. 

THE MODERATOR:  You mentioned last year you ran another Indy Lights graduate Jack Hawksworth.  As a former driver, is it becoming more and more important for you to support the up-and-coming talent in the series? 

BRYAN HERTA:  I think it's important for the series.  As a team owner, I have to take a narrower view.  Frankly, it just comes down to getting the very best guy in our car that we can get. 

I'm very pleased with where we ended up this year.  I believe Gabby is going to do some great things this year in the car and I believe he's a guy that we want to try and hang on to and keep on the team for several years to come. 

I think we can build together and we can grow together. 

THE MODERATOR:  As I mentioned earlier, Gabby Chavez is the 2014 Indy Lights champion which he won with four victories. 

Gabby, congratulations to you.  I know you were working hard to secure a ride for the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series season.  How much of a relief is it for you to have that deal come together with a team like Bryan Herta Autosport? 

GABBY CHAVEZ:  The relief is only temporary because as soon as the deal is done you have to get your head down and start focusing on what's next. 

As soon as the deal was announced, I was very happy.  It's been a long journey to get to where I am.

We've had a lot of sacrifice, a lot of hard times.  This is only just the first victory we can get out of it. 

Now it's time to get back to work and really looking forward to enjoying a great season. 

THE MODERATOR:  Gabby, I know you haven't been on track all too much, but from the experience you've had so far, how much of what you learned in the Mazda Road to Indy ladder system have you been able to apply and what adjustments have you had to make? 

GABBY CHAVEZ:  Oh, everything that I've learned so far in the last three years in the Mazda Road to Indy and the last two years in Indy Lights I've been able to apply to the IndyCar Series.  Especially when it comes down to the first race on the ovals, the whole oval schedule that we have, I think that's where it's going to make a bigger difference. 

I'm really happy.  I think the ladder series is how it should be and it's preparing the drivers, as Bryan said, not only Jack Hawksworth showing some amazing speed, but Carlos Muñoz having demonstrated the quality of drivers that we're feeding into IndyCar is very high. 

THE MODERATOR:  We'll open it up for questions. 

Q.    Bryan, not only have you signed Gabby but you made an engineering addition with John Dick coming onboard.  What do you hope to achieve with him and how do you think he and Gabby will have the chance to work together?

BRYAN HERTA:  John was with us at the Sebring test.  He and Gabby worked together there.  I've known him for many years.  I never worked physically with John when I was driving.  He's a guy I have a lot of respect for. 

When we were looking for that right combination for Gabby, we had kind of an opportunity signing the driver first and making sure that we're building a group of people around him that fits. 

Gabby had a good experience working with John.  Frankly for me, we wanted to pair a lot of experience around Gabby, and John certainly fits the bill for that.  He's been around a long time.  He's been in IndyCar for a long time.  His experience will definitely be a great benefit to Gabby as he's learning this year. 

Q.    Gabby, you're going to be a rookie in a year where aero kits are coming into the season.  What do you make of the opportunity to help develop the car with something that is going to be new for everybody throughout the year? 

GABBY CHAVEZ:  Yeah, I think it's a great opportunity.  I mean, not only for that, but for myself as a driver to really develop and enhance my skills at developing the car. 

I think it's going to be a great challenge.  Like I said before, it's going to be harder than ever before.

Like I said, I'm just ready for the challenge and I'm excited to get going. 

Q (The EDJE).    Gabby, you've been part of a class of upcoming drivers that have had flashes of brilliance along the way.

Reviewing your history with Star Pro Mazda, a couple that come to mind is Sage Karam and Zach Veach.  How does it feel to come up with a full season Verizon IndyCar Series ride before Sage and Zach? 

GABBY CHAVEZ:  I mean, I don't ever try to take anything away from anyone.  But I guess before Zach, you'd like to see Sage have a ride as well.  He's a deserving champion, as I am.  But essentially we want to have all these guys get a ride, not only Zach, not only Sage, we want to have all the young drivers that are eventually going to be the future stars of the sport get a ride.

It's a difficult question to answer.  Mainly I like to be happy for what I have accomplished.  I have a great team behind me working very hard to make this happen as well as working with Bryan's team. 
I think we're just happy that we made it happen on our side. 

Q (The EDJE).    How did you enjoy driving in the Rolex 24? 

GABBY CHAVEZ:  I mean, it's a great experience.

It was my second year driving for the same team.  It's always a great experience.  It's something very different that I'm not used to driver changes, long three-hour stints.  It is a very unique experience that definitely broadens I guess my professional career. 

Q (The EDJE).    After coming from Indy Lights, are you looking forward to competing again in 20-plus car fields? 

GABBY CHAVEZ:  Yeah, absolutely.  I mean, it's definitely a big challenge stepping up.  Obviously every time you step up, drivers just get better and better.  It's going to be a big challenge. 

I think with Indy Lights, you can't take too much into consideration the car count, even though it is slow and it's growing thankfully, because when you look at how guys like Jack Hawksworth impressed everyone, and everybody thought he would be a nobody last season, he impressed everyone, as well as Carlos Muñoz in his rookie Indy 500 and his rookie year.  You can't look too much into the car count when you have to look at the quality of the drivers. 

Q (The EDJE).    Bryan, do you have plans to be adding any more drivers this season?  Seems a lot of teams have a strategy to have many drivers because that allows to have more testing time with the aerodynamic kits. 

BRYAN HERTA:  Well, we are going to run a second car at the Speedway this year, which will be a first for us, running two cars.

I think as long as that goes well, we want to make sure we keep the focus on Gabby and his program this year, that we're doing everything we need to do for him. 

But we do want to grow the program.  We would like to be a two-car team sooner than later.  I think we're open to the idea of doing more races later in the year as we work towards hopefully a full two-car program next year. 

Q (The EDJE).    How is the change with finding out about Brazil in such a sudden fashion, how has that affected your plans going forward?

BRYAN HERTA:  It really hasn't affected us too much.

If anything, frankly, it helps us a little bit from the planning standpoint just because you'd like to have your deals done a little earlier than January, but this is the timing we had to deal with.  We got everything done.  We've got a little more time to get prepared, do a little more testing prior to the first race at St. Pete. 

Logistically it's great for us.  Competitively obviously we're racers and we want to do as many races as we can.  But we understand the reasons for the change. 

Q (The EDJE).    Being a car owner, I assume it's always better to maybe have the same set schedule in terms of numbers of races.  If they were to add another race, where would you most likely like to have it?  Long Beach, Detroit? 

BRYAN HERTA:  I mean, if it were up to me, I'd love to see us go to new markets.

As a racer, Road America is such a great track.  Love to be there.  I always enjoyed racing in Portland.  There's certainly places that we can do a lot of good. 

Circuit of America, I was there for the F1 race.  Beautiful, beautiful facility.  Would love to see us go there as well. 

Q (The EDJE).    I saw the PR release saying the March 8th date that would make sense going with the PWC, coinciding with that, since so many of the other races have that as a complementary series, that's not going to happen, sadly.

What else are you looking forward to this season? 

BRYAN HERTA:  In terms of other races, adding races, we're trying to keep our heads down, keep focused on building our team.

What I'm excited about is a little bit of a fresh start for us this year, having Gabby in.  He's very enthusiastic.  He's been in the shop almost every single day since we signed the contract, which is great.  Really just focus on building our program and continue to evolve and achieve more and more results on the track. 

Q.    Gabby, Carlos Muñoz has admitted that Juan Pablo Montoya is his role model.  Who do you consider to be your racing role model? 

GABBY CHAVEZ:  That's a difficult question.  I mean, I've had various role models throughout different stages of my life, even before I was racing.  I loved watching racing.  Especially at those times, when I was eight, nine, ten years old, I would get up every morning at 4 or 5 in the morning to watch the Formula One races where Juan Pablo Montoya was racing.  I followed his career closely.

As I started building my career, you started almost picking role models for who you wanted to be almost at that time. 

As I started racing in Europe, I would take a few guys there that I'd like to follow kind of their footsteps.  Then I came back to the States.  I really enjoyed my time here and realized this is where I want to be.  I started out in the Pro Mazda Series, then two seasons in Indy Lights. 

At that time it's almost like you're getting so close to the guys, the IndyCar guys, that you almost want to pick a role model, but you don't want to get too involved with that admiration because sooner or later if you achieve your goals, you're going to have to go head-to-head against them. 

Q.    As a rookie this year, you're about to embark on some new races, courses.  What race or track are you looking most forward to in this 2015 season? 

GABBY CHAVEZ:  I guess I could break it down into two categories.  I really look forward every year to racing at Long Beach.  It's one of my favorite street courses.  So that's definitely my favorite there.  I really want to experience that in an IndyCar. 

Then also you can never leave behind or forget about the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.  It's incredible.  To experience that first in Indy Lights, getting close to 200 miles an hour, then to make a jump to being over 240 miles an hour, to me that's what I'm looking most forward to this year. 

Q.    Bryan, with the cancellation in Brazil, is there any indication from IndyCar that they're going to try to speed up the delivery of aero kits to the teams?

BRYAN HERTA:  Frankly, even though it happened suddenly, I think IndyCar has done a really good job internally of communicating with the teams what they're doing, what they're trying to do.

Obviously it's all a little bit fluid still in a lot of areas. 

But I don't believe that aero kits are going to become available any sooner, frankly because everybody's production is based on that March 1st date, and I don't think there's an ability to make any additional parts sooner. 

Q.    Have you been able to see any sketches of Honda's kit compared to Chevy's as far as the differences in how the cars are going to look?

BRYAN HERTA:  I've seen some sketches, but we haven't seen any of the actual production parts.  I haven't seen any drawings of the Chevy aero kit.  I only saw the spy photos of Penske's car when they ran at Circuit of the Americas.  I am sure they have evolved a lot since then. 

It's a real point of entry.  I think we're all very curious and looking forward to seeing the cars turn up at Barber for spring training and see what we got. 

Q.    Gabby, could you comment on the importance of the scholarship prize that you were awarded with your championship last year with Indy Lights, and also the just the preparation that your years in the Road to Indy has provided you to make this step up to the IndyCar Series. 

GABBY CHAVEZ:  I think the scholarship prize, it almost makes the deal happen sometimes.  I mean, I think it's great that they're giving the champion sort of a head start into their IndyCar career.

Without the scholarship, it would have been very hard to make a deal happen anywhere.  So I'm very happy.  I'm very grateful that that program exists. 

I think it's not only in Indy Lights but the whole Mazda Road to Indy is coming along very strong.

Ever since my first year in Pro Mazda in 2012, you know, just started building on that, getting myself familiarized with the tracks, with the people, the whole atmosphere.  Everything is different. 
So just to be able to work from those years of experience just makes my transition to IndyCar that much easier. 

Q.    As the reigning Indy Lights champion, talk about your optimism of the direction of the Indy Lights Series.  And Bryan, do you plan to be involved again at any point? 

GABBY CHAVEZ:  I'm very happy with what's happening right now with Indy Lights and the new car.  I think that's something that the series needed, and definitely is attracting a lot of attention, even new teams from overseas, new drivers, drivers that have competed in Formula One before, now coming over to Indy Lights.  I think that's great for the series.  I think it's great for IndyCar as well because it's going to expand that feeder system.  I'm very pleased that's going in a positive direction. 

BRYAN HERTA:  From a team standpoint, I think we're very open to coming back.  We started our team in the Indy Lights Series.  We wouldn't even exist without it as a team.  I believe in the importance of it, what it does for the development of drivers.  I really think that the new car is a huge plus for the series. 

From our standpoint, we feel like we needed to take a step back from it so we could really focus on making a step forward in the IndyCar program this year.  But I would love to see us come back into Indy Lights again at some point in the future.

INDY500 DW12 #poleday And #bumpday Weekend Trials

INDY500 DW12 #poleday And #bumpday Weekend Trials

What is a racing series without its unplanned moments of friction? Short answer? ... not interesting at all and this last weekend in the IZOD IndyCar Series at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) had its share of unplanned moments of friction.

During 2011 and many of the previous years at IMS during the qualifications process known as Pole Day and the following day known as Bump Day (new media Twitter communications hashtags #poleday and #bumpday), the unplanned friction centered around Series Management and Team relations. This year, the weekend was spiced up with the addition of integrating the nuances of a new racing platform formula that has the choice of three turbo-charged 2.2L engine power-plants - Chevrolet | Honda | Lotus .


One of the biggest concerns, in fact, centered itself around the perceived lack of competitiveness and power developed by the Lotus engine. The cracks of this controversy began to show themselves amongst the four teams (HVM Racing/Dreyer & Reinblod Racing/Bryan Herta Autosport/Dragon Racing) and five drivers that had run the first three races of the season with mild moments of success. This mild success was not the result of having inexperienced and unsuccessful drivers piloting the new DW12 Dallara chassis with the Lotus engine (HVM's Simona de Silvestro - P3 in Atlantic Championship 2009 - DRR's Oriol Servia - P4 2011/11 top-10 finishes, BHA's Alex Tagliani - P11/6 top-10 finishes/2 poles, DR's Sebastien Bourdais - P1 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and DR's Katherine Legge - P3 in Atlantic Championship standings 2005  - the most winning driver being four-time Champ Car World Series champion Sebastien Bourdais).

Before the traditional activities that surround the month of May at IMS in the lead up to the INDY500, two teams (Dreyer & Reinblod Racing/Bryan Herta Autosport) lobbied series management and won release from their obligation to use the Lotus engine in their DW12's, in fact one team, Bryan Herta Autosport did not travel to the fourth race of the season at Sao Paulo, Brazil to prepare for the transition to the Honda engine. After Sao Paulo, Dreyer & Reinbold racing negotiated an alliance with Panther Racing to be supplied and supported with a Chevrolet engine which had them change their logo for the rest of the season to reflect the alliance.

During the first chance at getting practice at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Lotus had trouble delivering engines for Dragon Racing (while Dragon Racing launched a lawsuit to seek about 4.6 million dollars in damages due to the breach in their contract). The team missed out on six practice sessions and sought permission from the series to change to a different engine supplier. With permission granted, Dragon Racing was able to get Sebastien Bourdais and Kathrien Legge through Rookie Orientation on Thursday with Chevrolet engines.

In the meantime, in order to save some face, Lotus put their support behind a one-time team effort, Fan Force Racing to place 47 year-old Lotus driver/ambassador and former Formula 1 driver Jean Alesi on the track to qualify along side of the one remaining team of HVM Racing and Simona de Silvestro.

During the activities over the week-end to fill the traditional 33 places allowed for the INDY500 field, many speculated that their may not actually be 33 cars that could qualify for the field. If this were to happen, it would be the first time since 1947 and result in an embarrassment to the new formula of the IZOD IndyCar Series.

Other unplanned moments of friction came primarily through the process known as Bump Day. After the field of 33 cars is filled with qualifying runs, anyone who wishes to challenge to get into the field could present a car and post a time faster than the slowest qualified car and "Bump" the slowest car out of the field ... hence Bump Day.


Briscoe bested fellow Chevrolet IndyCar V-6 driver, James Hinchcliffe, No. 27 Team Go.Daddy.com Andretti Autosport Chevrolet, by .0023 of a second. Hinchcliffe’s qualifying run was 2:38.9537/226.481 mph. The difference is the equivalent of 9.168 inches. In The Pits: Drama _ of course! _ in IndyCar again

One can't help but wonder, though, if there's been too much back-room politicking going on since Indianapolis Motor Speedway opened its gates May 10 to begin preparations for Sunday's race. Almost every day since has had some sort of controversy - many bordering on comical - and rumors have run rampant about everything from an alleged owner-led charge to oust CEO Randy Bernard and IndyCar supposedly blocking two teams from fielding cars on Sunday's bump-less Bump Day.

Then came the long list of penalties announced Sunday night, about 30 minutes after practice had concluded for a four-day off period.

IndyCar found 18 different infractions among 13 teams in pre-qualifying inspection, and track historian Donald Davidson believes the numbers were a one-day record for the series, though fines have never been consistently announced.

Few teams were immune and the entire front row was docked a total of $70,000 for five penalties split between pole-sitter Ryan Briscoe of Penske Racing, and Andretti Autosport teammates James Hinchcliffe and Ryan Hunter-Reay.

Briscoe, in Charlotte on Monday to promote the Indy 500, wasn't sure his Penske team had actually violated the brake rule that brought a $15,000 fine. Penske team president Tim Cindric confirmed on Twitter that Will Power's car indeed had unapproved brake pads, but claimed the team never would have sent Briscoe out with the same pads once Power's had been flagged.

Either way, Briscoe believed IndyCar - behind new race director Beaux Barfield and vice president of technology Will Phillips - had taken a huge step in levying so many fines.

"It's surprising because we haven't seen much of that in the past," Briscoe said. "But I think we are seeing a new guy in charge of the rules now, and maybe in the past, some things have been let past, and I think it's good that teams are being penalized for not abiding by the rules 100 percent. Rules are there to be followed, rules are made to be enforced and they should be."

That strong stance from the sanctioning body likely came as a shock to team owners - and it came during yet another stretch of off-track drama.

It left only two Lotus-powered cars in the field, and they've been so far off the pace that many are openly wondering if they should even be allowed in the race. It didn't help that 47-year-old former Formula One driver Jean Alesi, who has never before raced an oval, said he felt "unsafe" in the car and was "concerned" for his fellow competitors because it is so slow.

Rubens Barrichello, who spent 19 years in F1 before moving to IndyCar this season, believes Alesi is handicapped by his Lotus engine.

"It's been very unfortunate that the Lotus power is not up to the speed," Barrichello said. "If we do end up racing with that 10- or 15-mile (speed) difference, it could be a problem for both of the (Lotus drivers). I hope just that he has a safe race."

IndyCar needs Alesi and Simona de Silvestro in the race to avoid not having a full 33-car field for the first time since 1947, but it's possible that the two cars will be black-flagged for failing to maintain a reasonable speed.

There was disappointment Sunday when no team owner threw together a last-minute entry to try to bump one of the Lotus cars out of the field. Both Jay Howard and Pippa Mann indicated they were close to putting together deals, but couldn't get Chevrolet or Honda to give them an engine. That led to rumors it was IndyCar who halted the engines to protect Lotus - an allegation series officials vehemently denied.

Let's not forget the TurboGate saga, either, with Chevrolet losing two appeals trying to prevent Honda from using a new compressor cover on its turbocharger. The defeat has supposedly left powerhouse owner Roger Penske so infuriated he's refusing to speak to Bernard, but yet it's Penske who has a driver on the pole and two more starting on the second row.

Penske, who at least publicly has preached a message of unity and support of IndyCar leaders, goes into the 500 perfect on the season with five poles and four victories. Honda, meanwhile, had only one driver qualify inside the top 10.

So from the outside, it sure looks like a mess for IndyCar. But Bernard is fond of claiming "all press is good press," and if drama gets fans to tune into Sunday's race, then maybe IndyCar knows exactly what it is doing.

Please be aware that the rule book has a provision that if cars do not maintain an adequate speed for safety reasons, they will be Black Flagged and removed from racing on the track. This rule is known as the 105% Rule.

Dragon Racing Set To Abandon Lotus For Indy500 - Developing On Twitter

The concept of a group of truly competitive cars in a third engine offering (dubbed here as the "Lotus Legion") seems to be disappearing ... and fast. It was only a month ago when it appeared that Lotus/Judd could not supply enough engines for the Month of May at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) and the run-up to the INDY500.

Bryan Herta Autosport and Dreyer & Reinbold Racing decided to stablize their sponsorship and racing efforts for the season by jumping to the other engine manufacturers - BHA with Chevy and DRR with a joint agreement with Panther Racing and Honda.


Over the last couple of days during practice at IMS, Dragon Racing, with their drivers ... four-time CCWS champion Sebastien Bourdais and Katherine Legge,  began to seek an alternative to being saddled with the lack of power, lack of engines, and the potential of shaky sponsorship wrapped up with the choice of the Lotus/Judd engine effort.

Lotus probably began to see the writing on the wall early on because they brought their driving/brand embassador, noted Formula 1 driver Jean Alesi, over from Europe to add an additional car to the frey along with primary Lotus partner, HVM Racing.

Indy 500: Dragon Racing finally hits the track at IMS

Dragon Racing has finally made its season debut at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The No. 6 car driven by Sebastien Bourdais turned its first lap shortly after 8 a.m. this morning. Bourdais turned 21 laps in the first hour, a fastest lap of 205.116 mph.

The team has been mired in a legal dispute with Lotus, but it is transitioning to Chevrolet, the engine that powered today's laps.

Dragon also plans to field Katherine Legge in her Rookie Orientation Program effort. Bourdais drove her car.

As of 9 a.m., IndyCar had not released a statement saying Dragon had been permitted to switch engine manufacturers.

Permission is required by series rules.

Bourdais is taking a refresher course since he hasn't competed at IMS since the 2005 Indianapolis 500. That was his only 500. Legge is a true rookie at IMS, and her only oval-track race came in the 2006 Champ Car World Series season. She finished sixth at the race in Milwaukee.
