Virtual Petersen Car Week Makes Up For A COVID Cancel Of Pebble Beach

The Petersen Automotive Museum didn’t want to see the global enthusiasm for Monterey Car Week go away this year like so many other car shows so it’s bottling the essence of the week into 5 days of amazing automotive content. This digital effort includes 12 videos and leaves no one without having something of a summertime car culture experience that will assist in replacing the void created by this China Virus colored and shaped world.

Over 40 of the largest automotive companies have come together to make this happen and the schedule includes live vehicle debuts, online auctions, exclusive interviews, virtual car shows, and even a celebrity judged Concours!

This 12 video presentation collection begins with the virtual INAUGURAL PETERSEN CAR WEEK CONCOURS that is quite extensive, featuring 100+ entries, and lasts for over three hours. Once this presentation is over, or if one wished to see any of the 11 other presentation videos, simply look to the drop down in the upper left-hand corner and explore the options.

Our fully judged digital Concours features more than 100 eclectic, rare, and beautiful vehicles.

At the end of the show, we will announce the 29 winners for all of the classes. All Best in Class Awards are presented by Collier Automedia.

New At The Petersen Automotive Museum - Reclaimed Rust: The James Hetfield Collection

New At The Petersen Automotive Museum - Reclaimed Rust: The James Hetfield Collection

For those who are fans of heavy metal rock music, the name of Metallica is emblazoned at the top of their minds ... this group has only sold 130 million records comprised through a 10 album catalog. The lead singer, guitarist, guitar designer, and one of two forming members of the band to remain a driving force, James Hetfield, started his life in Southern California Downey, came to motor culture honestly through having a father who, when he wasn't at work, was in the garage, tinkering.

James Hetfield was completely humbled and honored to be able to share a collection of very special artful creations between his ideas and the craftsmanship of  Rick Dore from his garage up in Northern California to here at the Bruce Meyers Family Gallery at the Petersen Museum. Image(s) Credit: Edmund Jenks (2020)

This ribbon cutting ceremony, the opening of the Reclaimed Rust - The James Hetfield Collection - was preceded by a Fireside Chat (interview) with Terry Karges - Executive Director of the Petersen Automotive Museum of James Hetfield followed by an auction of two very special James Hetfield designed & signed (on the spot) guitars manufactured by ESP.

With the auction on the Hetfield designed ESP Guitars complete, a group photo (R to L) of Bruce Meyers, James Hetfield, Rick Dore and Terry Karges. Image(s) Credit: Edmund Jenks (2020)

The auction was held by Bruce Meyer, himself, with the proceeds going as a write-off donation to the Petersen Automotive Museum - a very exciting affair since the two guitars were set at a combined retail value of about $8,500.00 - the two guitars achieved bid sale results of about $17,000.00 much to the visible surprise of James Hetfield, himself.  I just went through the photo files and the 300 or so folks who attended this ribbon cutting were very pleased and entertained.

Key vehicles on display include the 1948 Jaguar “Black Pearl,” the 1934 Packard “Aquarius,” the 1953 Buick Skylark “Skyscraper,” the 1937 Lincoln Zephyr “VooDoo Priest,” the 1936 Auburn “Slow Burn.” which were designed by famed builder and television personality, Rick Dore, as well as the 1936 Ford “Iron Fist,” the 1937 Ford Coupe “Crimson Ghost,” and the 1932 Ford Roadster “Black Jack.”

Along with the custom vehicles, memorabilia on display also includes an ESP Hollow Body guitar and a Mesa amplifier that are painted to match the Buick Skylark “Skyscraper,” images displaying the build process of each car and a video of Hetfield talking about the cars.

This is a very credible display and custom car collection. The concept and inspiration of each car is described along the base of each car and the artistry of many of these customizations is exceptional.

One of the most heralded cars is the 1948 Jaguar “Black Pearl" which required much original metal formation through the use of a wood buck upon which the skin of the car was formed and designed by famed builder and television personality, Rick Dore.

The Petersen was so high on having this display, they placed it in the Bruce Meyer Family Gallery room, replacing  “Winning Numbers: The First, The Fastest, The Famous” (2019) which, since the reopening of the the new exoskeleton clad museum's launch, has had  only three other collections - "The Roots of Monozukuri: Creative Spirit in Japanese Automaking" (2018), “Seeing Red: 70 Years of Ferrari” (2017), beginning with the all silver painted classic display of "Precious Metal" (2016) - being displayed in this most prestigious space.

The Petersen Automotive Museum, once this exhibition has its run and is replaced in about one year, will be arranging additional exhibitions of this collection at other prestigious venues around the world - to this point, James was quite proud and effusive.

‘Comments From The Canyon’
The Inaugural ‘Classic Auto Show’ Los Angeles January 27-29, 2017
By: James Groth for The English Car Company

Internationally known classic car owner and Founding Chairman of the Petersen Automotive Museum, Bruce Meyer opened the media event for the inaugural ‘Classic Auto Show’ at the Los Angles Convention Center. Bruce’s narration covered the history of each of the stunning black automobiles on display in the ‘Winners Circle’ many from the Margie and Robert E. Petersen Automotive Museum.

Bruce shared personal stories as well. The most memorable story was about the three thousand trip he and his wife of forty-eight years took in his 1932 Ford “Roller Coupe” from Beverly Hills to Victoria, Canada. This hot rod is truly a period build of the early 1950’s and is without the amenities of a modern hot rod.

Light weight materials and design were garnered from World War ll aircraft for this custom built 1932 Ford, even the seats are out of a military plane.  The interior is comfortable per the Meyer’s, but in the sense of early off road vehicles, great for any true enthusiast. The hot rod also has a large enough trunk to carry everything for their adventurous trip.

An All Star Team from Velocity TV was in full force at the Classic Car Show LA to hold a number of seminars with Q&A on collecting, restoring, detailing and valuation of collector cars. A number of the Velocity Team also attended the Petersen Automotive Museum event to honor race car driver, designer and team owner Dan Gurney.

Among the Velocity Team I had a word with were ‘Overhaulin’ design legend Chip Foose of Huntington Beach, CA, Car restorer and host of ‘Chasing Classic Cars’ Wayne Carini was in from New England as well as Englishman, Mike Brewer co-host of ‘Wheeler Dealers, all were there to honor the legendary career of Dan Gurney and enjoy the remodeled Petersen, their exceptional collection of Gurney race cars.

Custom Built Cross Continental Racer. Image Credit: James Groth (2017)

This is one of two cars built on a fire truck chassis designed for and having competed in cross continental endurance racing. The vehicle weighs 8,000 pounds and has a 14 liter motor. Given the lack of gas stations on these endurance runs the team had to carry five extra fuel cans on the vehicle.

Number 1 Shelby Cobra owned by Bruce Meyer. Image Credit: James Groth(2017)

The number 1 Shelby Cobra was on display looking better than new. This car did not have a race history but is truly significant by the fact that this 1962 is the first ever production built Shelby Cobra. It’s now is powered by a Ford 289 cid rather than the Ford 260 cid motors installed in the early Cobras. The 1962 Shelby Cobra won ‘Best of Show Grand Boulevard’ for collector Bruce Meyer.

From an attendee experience this first time show put on by Sr. VP Mike Carlucci and his team was a success in terms of the high quality of the show cars and the impressive list of guest speakers from Velocity’s cable shows. The Los Angeles car clubs turned out in full force enabling for an exceptionally diverse collection of European, Asian and American customs and hot rods. The planned date for the 2018 show per Mr. Carlucci is expected to be in March. I wish them continued success and appreciated all who presented their cars or organized this quality event.
