Wedge Issues Invade The 73rd Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance

Wedge Issues Invade The 73rd Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance

A modern version of the best car-judging show known throughout the world, the Concours d'Elegance held on the Monterey Peninsula of central California along the 18th fairway at Pebble Beach golf course was riddled with wedge issues through the introduction of a design form as a classification.

The Wedge, once seen, fully understood. Two classes were introduced for the first time highlighting this line of design and innovation - V-1: Wedge-Shaped Concept Cars & Prototypes Early & V-2: Wedge-Shaped Concept Cars & Prototypes Late.

Here the Zero is hot on the tail of the 1979 Aston Martin Bulldog, which was said to be the fastest production car of its era. Both of these iconic wedge cars are charging through Del Monte Forest down to the Pebble Beach Concours show field.

Sunday's surprise had these two cars win Best In Class awards as judged in the showfield. Both cars were owned and shown by Phillip Sarofim, Beverly Hills, California. Wedge issues.

The diversity and breadth that appeared on the 18th Fairway to be judged was quite surprising since when one says "wedge" one believes that there may not be much room for interpretation. The classes did not have a limitation on year developed and produced so this broadened out these potentials and invigorated the overall 73rd Concours by their inclusion.

These two first time classes had 12 cars in the V-1 Class and 9 cars in the V-2 Class on the fairway to be judged.

The most recent car to be judged, and the newest car on the lawn, was this 2023 ItalDesign Asso di Picche In Movimento. "Ace Of Spades In Movement" is a 2+2 electric coupĂ©, 3 doors, without a center pillar, built on a next-generation platform, and based on today’s rationale on car design choices shaped by the concepts of safety and electrification. "Asso di Picche In Movimento" is 4662 mm long, 1230 mm high and 1945 mm wide.
 
"Italdesign Asso di Picche In Movimento" is, in fact, the name chosen for the digital anniversary show-car that translates the original model into the present, conferring a timeless nature, while preserving its essence and the simplicity of its design.

The top view highlights the visual continuity between the windshield, roof and rear window: a single transparent expanse, a true architectural element that guarantees a bright interior and structural strength. Underneath it, are concealed the cameras that replace side rearview mirrors, which were absent on the first model. Designed to protect passengers from the sun, a part of the roof has been treated like a polarized lens and filters out 100% of UVA rays.

With a designer's note that captures the finned era of the 1950s, this 1960 Plymouth XNR Ghia Roadster grabs all that is imaginative from that time. From the flair accents highlighting the wheel position along the side panels, to the attention-getting chrome and badging displays, set this platform on a different level.

One of the more brilliant displays in "one-of wedgedom" would probably have to be a car that was first at Pebble Beach in August on the concept lawn in 2017. It is a car valued at over $1.5 Million dollars and built through the design talents of Ken Okuyama, a graduate of ArtCenter College of Design. 

If that name sounds familiar, Okuyama is a career automotive design pro who spent much of his career at Pininfarina. He is credited in helping create vehicles like the original Acura NSX, Ferrari 599 GTB, Ferrari Enzo, Maserati Birdcage 75th Concept, and even the fourth-generation Chevrolet Camaro. Yes, that Camaro. 

The car is the Kode 0 - Debut: 2017 - Engine: 6.5-Liter V12 - Specs: 690 Horsepower / 507 pound-feet.

And what's a wedge show without a 1988 Cizeta-Moroder V16T Prototype.

The Cizeta-Moroder was designed by Marcello Gandini — he of the Miura, Countach, and Lancia Stratos — and incorporates classic wedge design cues, including a nose close to the ground and a rear high up in the air. Cizeta-Moroder Motors srl, which was based in Modena, brought together Giorgio Moroder, financier and California show-business (music), and the technician Claudio Zampolli. The carbonfiber monocoque covers a big 6.9-litre V12 engine with a power output of 690 horsepower.

The last and most tragic wedge issue happened the evening after a day of motor culture celebration was over and in the books. 

The 1979 Ford Probe I Ghia Concept was designed by Ford design chief Don F. Kopka along with Carozzeria Ghia, and was based on a Fox-body Mustang platform with a turbocharged 2.3-litre four-cylinder Cobra engine. With its rear wheel spats, elongated rear deck and large glass greenhouse, the Probe I influenced many future Ford production cars.

Funny, no one thinks about the real joy in being a part of this unique event with one-of unique cars and how truly special this is until one is jerked hard toward a reality that nothing lasts forever, especially when the glow of the moment is brought to a halt through the glow of a fire.

The car is owned by Scott Grundfor Co., an Arroyo Grande, California restoration operation, that has worked on and also owns some 15 other rare Ford prototypes. Drew Grundfor, speaking on behalf of the company, told Motor Trend that the burned-out shell of the car is expected to be displayed in the Scott Grundfor Co. showroom, and that they still have to decide whether they will attempt to restore the car, or leave it as-is.

The estimated value of the car has been rumored to be about $1 Million dollars.

Issues, issues, issues - wedge issues, after which the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance will never be the same.

Ely Reeves Callaway III Leaves Behind A Legacy Second To None In Business, Culture, & Competition

Preferring to use his given second name as his first, Reeves (Ely Reeves Callaway III) Callaway succumbed to injuries he had sustained in a fall on Tuesday, July 11 - he was at his home in Newport Beach California and was 75 years old.

Many observing from the outside would say, "With a name like Callaway, this guy had it made from the very beginning. A privilege beyond belief." This is understandable since many are familiar with the name Callaway from the worlds of competition in Wine and Golf. Both of these notable achievements of his textile businessman father, Ely Reeves Callaway Jr. (June 3, 1919 - July 6, 2001 at 82).

The actual privilege for Reeves Callaway, from the beginning, was being born with a sense of purpose and a self-taught mechanical wit. He was a person captured by motor culture and racing early in life where he was able to learn how to drive a race car to secure championships in racing Formula Vee on the East Coast of the United States. 

Not having the resources to pursue a career in racing, Reeves decided to teach others how to drive fast and efficient by being hired by Bob Bondurant's racing school. While using the newly launched BMW 320i as a school car, Reeves became familiar with its intricacies and deficiencies of the German design, and later convinced BMW to let him take one of its cars to his garage in Old Lyme, Connecticut, to tune it for more power. As is said ... "the rest is history."

Ely Callaway’s son Reeves, founder of Callaway Cars, dies at 75

The Callaway name is ubiquitous in golf, but in a certain part of the automotive world it means something completely different and unrelated.

Reeves Callaway - son of Callaway founder Ely - started Callaway Cars in 1977 and became one of the most respected builders of powerful and highly-modified Corvettes, Range Rovers and other models for customers who spent most of their time in the passing lane. Callaway Cars announced Friday that Ely Reeves Callaway III passed away July 11 after a fall at his home in Newport Beach, Calif. He was 75.

Callaway Cars started as a response to the first wave of heavily de-tuned "emissions-era" cars of the mid-1970s. By the mid-1980s, Callaway was putting highly engineered turbo kits into Corvettes and turning them into monsters hidden behind relatively stock looking exteriors. His twin-turbo "Sledgehammer" Corvette set the world street legal speed record of 254 miles per hour in 1988 and held it for more than 20 years.

Callaway's version of the 1999 Range Rover 4.6 HSE had a modified engine and drivetrain, and the 220 limited edition SUVs sold for an eye-watering (at the time) $75,000. His company currently offers modified versions of Chevrolet models ranging from the Corvette, trucks to SUVS like the Silverado and Tahoe.

Callaway's pioneering work with high-performance materials like carbon fiber were influential in Callaway Golf's research and development, and in recent years he served as a founding advisor for a start-up developing a blended-wing aircraft for NASA and the Air Force.

World Long Drive champion Kyle Berkshire might use a Callaway driver, but Reeves Callaway was the fastest Callaway on Earth.

What was most impressive in being around the presence of Reeves as he lived his life was his general joy in being around folks who appreciated competitive pursuits in motor sports and motor culture in general. A gentleman in most every way.

A true gentleman, he was the devoted father of four and grandfather of two. 

His large circle of friends, colleagues and admirers around the world will mourn his passing and miss him deeply.

More Equals Less In Upcoming GTP Championship Season

More Equals Less In Upcoming GTP Championship Season

Last year, NTT INDYCAR SERIES driver Will Power showed the world how a less equals more strategy can deliver a season series championship win (his career second). The WeatherTech GTP Class championship, however, has settled on a more equals less strategy to deliver a hybrid technology answer (more) to the reduction of carbon emissions (less) in a major professional motorsports competition series championship.

In a first of the new year ZOOM Call put on by IMSA, with the participants from teams representing the four major automotive manufacturers who will be competing in the 2023 GTP class of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Series - Cadillac, Acura, BMW, and Porsche - most all of the technical team leaders expressed a few common themes.

WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GTP Class Teams ZOOM Call Part 1

IMSA 101 - DPi cars are being replaced by LMDh cars for 2023 >>> an LMDh (Le Mans Daytona h) is a type of sports prototype race car that will compete alongside Le Mans Hypercar entries in the Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) class of the IMSA SportsCar Championship from 2023 - it also competes in the Hypercar class of the FIA World Endurance Championship.

The LMDh ruleset was created jointly by the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) and the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO). The cars will serve as the successor to the Daytona Prototype International class, utilizing regulations that were planned to become the next-generation Daytona Prototype International ruleset, converged with the Le Mans Hypercar ruleset, showing off the latest technology in mating traditional internal combustion engines (ICE) with electrification (Hybrid Technology) - tap for more.

In addition to having to integrate hybrid electric power units to the ICE power units (internal combustion engine) one has to consider what additional impacts will this have on a team as it prepares at the team shop environment, travel, and set-up at a track for testing and competition.

Gary Nelson, Cadillac Action Express Racing, was keen to point out that in previous DPi rules configuration, the team could just load up the car, parts, toolboxes and other support gear in one transporter. Here in the LMDh rules configuration, this will require two full transporters and a trailing 5th wheel trailer. 

We’re on the threshold of a thrilling new era in endurance sports car racing and Cadillac is all in! Cadillac Racing will contest the top category of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the FIA World Endurance Championship, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with its V-LMDh prototype race cars as the only U.S.-based manufacturer. The 2023 sports car racing season gets underway with the Daytona Roar (January 20-22, 2023) and Rolex 24 at Daytona (January 28-29, 2023). Jonathan Diuguid (pronounced Do-gid), Porsche Penske Motorsport ended Part 1 with the one element to this racing equation that, in the beginning of any season is on the more side, tire compound choices that will deliver the fastest times with longer runs - less pit stops with less time involved with the completion of each lap.

Motorsports Journal/EVHNews was able to ask questions from Brandon Fry of RLL about how the new RLL HQ helps the BMW GTP  Class effort & Jonathan Diuguid about working with a manufacturer to introduce a racing effort to this level of championship racing series - first Acura, and now Porsche - these questions begin this next Part 2 video.

Major concerns that are common with all teams and manufacturers as it relates to the level of confidence in the unknowns. Unknowns all track back to reliability during race day activities. As always, when something is new, one has no real idea if all of the bits, pieces, and tasked function parts will hold up to endurance race stresses and conditions. This is why we all push the limits of technology and application, this is why we race ... isn't it?

BMW Design Goes The Path Of Trans-Humanism Or Something

BMW Design Goes The Path Of Trans-Humanism Or Something

In a day and age tainted by fears of a Virus pandemic response raging for almost two years, causing major auto-makers to forego displaying at places like the LA Auto Show in 2021, BMW, with the release of its latest designed SUV tabbed the XM, has adopted a confusing design language that seems to be speaking in tongues.

This impression is not just a "one-of" by a writer who follows Motorsports and Motor Culture as a main focus, but one that was recently paraphrased in a video presentation produced by famed vehicle and products designer who once contributed to this BMW design legacy (noted through the MINI rebirth & the X5), Frank Stephenson.


Another impression shared on Frank's posted META/FB timeline by a Motor Press Guild colleague, John Grafman plays out as follows: 

the bmw design is indeed confusing. 

all roads may lead to rome, but all the lines on the xm are leading nowhere. furthermore, the surfaces, which are iffy too in this illustration, will only be more muddled in the real world where the lighting is not ideal.

sadly, it's easy to see how the design could be pulled out of the trash bin, but unfortunately it's too late for that.

did bmw clinic this design before moving forward? were those that were survey inebriated? were there no designers brave enough in the studio to say that the emperor has no clothes?

i saw the initial oversized grill design on a bmw (vision) concept five or so years ago in person at a centennial celebration down at barker hanger. that car had numerous unique features that were most likely not destined for production. i thought the grill was one of those. i was wrong ... and so was bmw.

BMW must have been impressed through some of the elements put into design lexicon by Lamborghini and soon thereafter adopted by Toyota.

Algorithms may be the cause of this confusing display of surfaces and elements. A trend is emerging out of the advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) where the Human brain of a specific Human being might be replicated/reproduced.

He alerts all of us about the impending influences and possible transformation in Humanity of Artificial Intelligence technology and the replication of the Human brain imported into a baseless & faceless machine(s). This trend and line of study is called Trans-Humanism or Singularity. What if this was being applied through automobile design with a room full of replicated Trans-Human designers? Where every successful design language is fed into the Singularity designers and this was the best they could come up with?

Heck, first time Electric SUV (2 models) manufacturer from Vietnam, Vinfast, seems to have had a greater grasp on the definition of their language in design than BMW. They even managed to not replicate the no-grille bull-nosed front end famously used by Tesla (and others).

At its base, vehicle design is art. In a two dimensional world, we have great examples of impressionistic extremes - Picasso, Dali, Pollock, Kahlo, Warhol, Bradford, and etc.. - each with their own themes. When one is confronted visually through so many themes and elements as one is with this BMW XM release is left asking, exactly, "Where is the art?" 

Upon first impressions and review of the BMW XM, we are left with a design that speaks to the observer in tongues, and not a one is left wagging.

A Key To Evolutionary Design - Variations On A Theme

Ever wonder what makes an artist a great automotive designer?

It comes down to the discipline one achieves through years of training, experiment, understanding materials, the balance of form & function, the creation of trash bin failures to grand acceptance and market success.

Just ask Art Center College of Design standout graduate, Frank Stephenson, who actually designed for, and penned the rebirth of the MINI Cooper and the first SUV platform produced by the famed German automobile manufacturer, the X5.


Frank Stephenson said in a 2017 interview published at The Drive "I'm flat-out not fond of modern-day cars," he told R&T. "They're going to where ugly cars are the new beautiful. Everybody loves the '50s and '60s in terms of what those cars were like. And we've kind of lost that romance of the design from that period, where the goal was to design a beautiful car, and people would love it at first sight. Nobody had to 'get used to' the design." ... 'nuff said.

Ireland's James Deane Makes His Return To Formula DRIFT A Beaming Success

Formula DRIFT Black Magic Pro Championship presented by BlackVue Dash Cameras kicked off the 14th season with an exciting day of action at the O’Reilly Auto Parts Round 1: Streets of Long Beach.  Irish driver James Deane returns to the Series and gets the win in the Worthhouse Drift Team / Falken Tire Nissan S15.

“What a way to start the season,” said Jim Liaw, president and co-founder of Formula DRIFT.  “With not only a capacity crowd, record numbers on the Livestream, but proof that Formula Drift is truly an international series where the best of the best come to compete.”

The first event of the season commenced on the Grand Prix of Long Beach Street Course.  The highly anticipated event was action packed from start to finish and the capacity crowd witnessed many competitive battles throughout the day.  The event also introduced new drivers to the field including Georgy Chivchyan from Russia and Piotr Wiecek from Poland and marked the return of Irish driver, James Deane.  The event broke records with the Livestream with over 1 million viewers tuning in from around the world over the two-day event weekend making for the largest viewership for a single event in Formula DRIFT history.


Deane returned to Formula DRIFT after a seven year hiatus from the Series in dramatic fashion.  Deane proved to be a contender after qualifying in second position and making his way through to the finals by defeating both former champion Michael Essa and the reigning and 3-time champion, Chris Forsberg.

Deane met with Ryan Tuerck in the Gumout / Nameless Performance / Hankook Toyota 86 in the semi-finals and with consistent driving all-day and a solid chase run he was able to advance to the Finals.

On the other side of the bracket in the semi-finals, Aurimas “Odi” Bakchis in the Falken Tire / Drifz Wheels / Ark Performance Nissan 240SX faced off against Alex Heilbrunn in the IMR / Nitto Tire BMW M3.  After a hard fought battle that was too close to call, the drivers met in a One More Time battle and while chasing Heilbrunn, Bakchis made an error entering the hairpin giving Heilbrunn the win to put him in the Finals.  Deane’s consistency and technical driving was no match for Heilbrunn in the Finals and Deane won his first Formula DRIFT victory to take the lead in the chase for the championship.

“Man, what a way to start back in Formula DRIFT after missing out on the last seven years,” said James Deane, winner of Round 1: Streets of Long Beach.  “I owe a lot to my good friend and teammate, Piotr Wiecek, who came up with this whole idea to come back to the Series as a two-car team.  To come out with the win is just mind blowing.  What a feeling!"

The visual and design explosion that is the LA Auto Show

Another year is in the books and it is time to kick off the 2014 automobile show season with the event that starts the debut and sales cycle all over again ... the Motor Press Guild hosted Press Days for the LA Auto Show.

MOTOR PRESS GUILD NAMES CAR OF THE YEAR FOR 2013 - L A AUTO SHOW (YouTube) - Motor Press Guild Names 2014's Mazda3 And Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Winners of its 2013 Innovation Vehicle of the Year Award. Winners Announced at the LA Auto Show's MPG Motoring Invitational presented by Forza Motorsport 5 and XBOX One.

This edition has a few design and booth highlights of note that include the bringing forward of a radically artful concept body design to the streets (if this ever happens, it is usually toned way down), a second look at mid-century luxury design in a hard top two-door (that had a dealer from Valencia, California chanting to the designers at the booth to "JUST BUILD IT"), a full 3-D car sculpture not intended to advance automobile design on the road but on the HD screen of a game console, and lastly, an artful booth presentation that featured two string instrument performers (violin and cello) playing classic rock-n-roll hits from Guns and Roses to the Doors.

There's little doubt that the 2015 BMW i8 is one of the most radical and groundbreaking performance cars this industry has seen in a long time. From its unique carbon-intensive construction to its 1.5-liter, three-cylinder and electric motor plug-in powertrain to its concept-car originated appearance (below in 2009), the flagbearer for BMW's new i venture challenges the very notion of what it takes to be a supercar. BMW introduced a radical concept body design at the LA Auto Show a couple of years ago that became a bit of a signature, but no one thought this sculpted approach would ever see the pavement of the stree of the light of the sun until the announcement of the new BMW iDrive.

Elmiraj advances the Cadillac philosophy of provocative modern design and engaging rear-wheel drive performance, with a 4.5-liter twin turbocharged V8 delivering an estimated 500 hp. Cadillac has been flirting with design in a different direction - away from the radical arch around a wheel element - to the simplicity of American mid-century modern inspired design (first shown a couple of years ago with the Ciel Concept, pronounced “C-L,” the French word for sky, a four-seat convertible) that is seeing a strong revival in homes, furniture, and now ... cars.

A modern update to the classic format of a two-door grand coupe, Elmiraj Concept provides a look inside the Cadillac Studio/North Hollywood to see how the designers envision performance and luxury for the next generation of luxury drivers. The long dash-to-axle front profile, a Cadillac signature, gives the coupe a performance-oriented form. The long wheelbase and clean bodyside characterizes the car’s spacious dimensions and elevated status.

An interesting observation at the stand was that this Elmiraj Concept display was directly across from the Bentley booth with all of their well-over $100,000 to $300,000-plus cars and most everyone who stopped to take in the view, had their backs toward the Bentley display.

Mercedes-Benz designers came up with the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept for a starring role in the PlayStation 3 racing game, Gran Turismo 6. But like Pinocchio, the folkloric wooden toy that came to life, the Vision Concept, or something like it, may sooner rather than later become a real-life model in the Mercedes lineup. Mercedes-Benz design in Sunnyvale, California used the occasion of the LA Auto Show to dazzle attendees with a full scale creation of a digital car, AMG Vision GT Concept, that will be featured as a supercar in the Gran Turismo 6 video game.

The really tragic thing, other than the obvious time and expense put forward on this artful motor culture display for just the promotion of a video game, this particular AMG Vision GT Concept will never see the light of day or a street ... it is not a car.

"This is the future of Mercedes-Benz design," Gorden Wagener, vice president for design at Daimler, said as he introduced the car at the Los Angeles Auto Show, where Motor Press Guild hosted Press Days began on Wednesday, simultaneous with its unveiling at the Tokyo motor show. "This car, or elements of it, will make its way into production."

KIA used its stage to introduce the world to its new full sized K900 four-door sedan. In the lead up to the presentation, however, the Press Days attendees were treated to a rather sublime concert of very hard rock songs with the twist of being performed with the delicate tones delivered through a violin and a cello accompanied by a slideshow of iconic images of California (from the Golden Gate Bridge to Griffith Observatory) that was projected through a very wide landscape format jumbo-tron with the image first projected in Black & White then fading into a Full Color version.

The Korean automaker unveiled the all-new K900, a large sedan that will offer the space and trappings of German land yachts, while undercutting their prices by tens of thousands of dollars.

"This is our boldest statement yet," said Tom Loveless, executive vice president of sales for Kia. "It's a true flagship sedan that symbolizes how far we've come, and we believe it will make you question everything you thought you knew about Kia."

Of course, there was more ... much, much, more ... but all one has to do to get a look and feel of the beginning of the automobile tradeshow season is just attend the LA Auto Show which runs from November 22 - December 1, 2013 at the Los Angeles Convention Center in downtown LA!
