Wedge Issues Invade The 73rd Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance

For the first time in the seventy-three year history, The Wedge. Wedge Issues Invade The 73rd Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance

A modern version of the best car-judging show known throughout the world, the Concours d'Elegance held on the Monterey Peninsula of central California along the 18th fairway at Pebble Beach golf course was riddled with wedge issues through the introduction of a design form as a classification.

The Wedge, once seen, fully understood. Two classes were introduced for the first time highlighting this line of design and innovation - V-1: Wedge-Shaped Concept Cars & Prototypes Early & V-2: Wedge-Shaped Concept Cars & Prototypes Late.

As the RetroAuto Poster description read >>> 73rd Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance Poster  - Retro Auto - Nuccio Bertone’s 1970 Lancia Stratos HF Zero has been called “the ultimate wedge” car and it takes prime of place on our RetroAuto poster, which celebrates the bold lines and shapes that transformed automotive design in the 1960s and held sway through much of the ensuing decades.

Here the Zero is hot on the tail of the 1979 Aston Martin Bulldog, which was said to be the fastest production car of its era. Both of these iconic wedge cars are charging through Del Monte Forest down to the Pebble Beach Concours show field.

Sunday's surprise had these two cars win Best In Class awards as judged in the showfield. Both cars were owned and shown by Phillip Sarofim, Beverly Hills, California. Wedge issues.

The diversity and breadth that appeared on the 18th Fairway to be judged was quite surprising since when one says "wedge" one believes that there may not be much room for interpretation. The classes did not have a limitation on year developed and produced so this broadened out these potentials and invigorated the overall 73rd Concours by their inclusion.

These two first time classes had 12 cars in the V-1 Class and 9 cars in the V-2 Class on the fairway to be judged.

The most recent car to be judged, and the newest car on the lawn, was this 2023 ItalDesign Asso di Picche In Movimento. "Ace Of Spades In Movement" is a 2+2 electric coupĂ©, 3 doors, without a center pillar, built on a next-generation platform, and based on today’s rationale on car design choices shaped by the concepts of safety and electrification. "Asso di Picche In Movimento" is 4662 mm long, 1230 mm high and 1945 mm wide.

"Italdesign Asso di Picche In Movimento" is, in fact, the name chosen for the digital anniversary show-car that translates the original model into the present, conferring a timeless nature, while preserving its essence and the simplicity of its design.
Image Credit: Albert Wong/Nacho Herrera (2024)

Vehicle body in aluminum and windows in polycarbonate combine to form one monolithic and seamless aerodynamic whole, enclosed by a single unbroken outline that unifies the roof, front end and rear end, all the way down to the tail panel, wrapping around the passenger compartment. Image Credit: Albert Wong/Nacho Herrera (2024)

On the rear, together with a reflector and a centrally located extractor, an active spoiler, chosen to contribute to the car’s aerodynamics. Image Credit: Albert Wong/Nacho Herrera (2024)

The top view highlights the visual continuity between the windshield, roof and rear window: a single transparent expanse, a true architectural element that guarantees a bright interior and structural strength. Underneath it, are concealed the cameras that replace side rearview mirrors, which were absent on the first model. Designed to protect passengers from the sun, a part of the roof has been treated like a polarized lens and filters out 100% of UVA rays.

With a designer's note that captures the finned era of the 1950s, this 1960 Plymouth XNR Ghia Roadster grabs all that is imaginative from that time. From the flair accents highlighting the wheel position along the side panels, to the attention-getting chrome and badging displays, set this platform on a different level.

One of the more brilliant displays in "one-of wedgedom" would probably have to be a car that was first at Pebble Beach in August on the concept lawn in 2017. It is a car valued at over $1.5 Million dollars and built through the design talents of Ken Okuyama, a graduate of ArtCenter College of Design.

If that name sounds familiar, Okuyama is a career automotive design pro who spent much of his career at Pininfarina. He is credited in helping create vehicles like the original Acura NSX, Ferrari 599 GTB, Ferrari Enzo, Maserati Birdcage 75th Concept, and even the fourth-generation Chevrolet Camaro. Yes, that Camaro.

The car is the Kode 0 - Debut: 2017 - Engine: 6.5-Liter V12 - Specs: 690 Horsepower / 507 pound-feet.

And what's a wedge show without a 1988 Cizeta-Moroder V16T Prototype.

The Cizeta-Moroder was designed by Marcello Gandini — he of the Miura, Countach, and Lancia Stratos — and incorporates classic wedge design cues, including a nose close to the ground and a rear high up in the air. It debuted at the 1989 Los Angeles and Geneva auto shows, and was owned by Moroder until 2022. Image Credit: Albert Wong/Nacho Herrera (2024)

Cizeta-Moroder Motors srl, which was based in Modena, brought together Giorgio Moroder, financier and California show-business (music), and the technician Claudio Zampolli. The carbonfiber monocoque covers a big 6.9-litre V12 engine with a power output of 690 horsepower.

The last and most tragic wedge issue happened the evening after a day of motor culture celebration was over and in the books.

The 1979 Ford Probe I Ghia Concept was designed by Ford design chief Don F. Kopka along with Carozzeria Ghia, and was based on a Fox-body Mustang platform with a turbocharged 2.3-litre four-cylinder Cobra engine. With its rear wheel spats, elongated rear deck and large glass greenhouse, the Probe I influenced many future Ford production cars.

Funny, no one thinks about the real joy in being a part of this unique event with one-of unique cars and how truly special this is until one is jerked hard toward a reality that nothing lasts forever, especially when the glow of the moment is brought to a halt through the glow of a fire.

The car is owned by Scott Grundfor Co., an Arroyo Grande, California restoration operation, that has worked on and also owns some 15 other rare Ford prototypes. Drew Grundfor, speaking on behalf of the company, told Motor Trend that the burned-out shell of the car is expected to be displayed in the Scott Grundfor Co. showroom, and that they still have to decide whether they will attempt to restore the car, or leave it as-is.

The estimated value of the car has been rumored to be about $1 Million dollars.

Issues, issues, issues - wedge issues, after which the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance will never be the same.

Say Y.E.S. To Developing The Next Generation Of Motor-Culture's Life Blood

Say Y.E.S. To Developing The Next Generation Of Motor-Culture's Life Blood

To spend a day at the NHRA's infamous annual Winternationals event weekend is always a special treat. What most who attend do not know is that the NHRA is serious about investing in developing the next generation of functionaries that would be needed to keep the next generations of racing superstars performing at dragstrips across the country in pursuit of their claim of the national championship.

Just this last Friday, for example, a group of friends were able to be invited to take in the introductory portion of the NHRA's enticement and engagement program directed at High School aged students to have them to begin thinking about the future of their lives as having careers that involve skills needed in support of automobiles, mobility, and communications engagement to others.

This program goes by the name NHRA Y.E.S. Program which stands for Youth & Education Services Program. It was formed in 1989 with the expressed purpose to provide quality programs and activities for schools and youth organizations nationwide that focus on the importance of goals and continued education so that students learn about and explore various career opportunities. The program will also show students how S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) is applied to both, real world situations and NHRA Drag Racing, which they will have the opportunity to see live, in action, at the track!

On Friday, large groups of students, and educators, totaling over 800 persons in each of three sessions - over 2,500 registered participants, were given a 25 minute presentation by four members of organizations that are directly involved in the goals of the NHRA's Y.E.S. Program and its powerful effects in career guidance. Panelists were:

Hernan Cortez - Mac Tools- Franchise Recruiter
Susie Frausto - Gerber Collision & Glass - Vice President of Marketing
TSgt. Armando Munoz - U.S. Air Force
Bob Tasca III - FORD - The driver of the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Mustang Funny Car

All introduced and presented by Alan Reinhart: NHRA Announcer. NHRA Y.E.S. Program Emcee

First year, newly christened, venue title sponsor proudly displays new signage as IN-N-OUT Pomona Dragstrip. Not a better marriage could be made given the past history of association between these two Southern California born icons of drag racing. Further, it doesn't hurt to have access to a title sponsor Double-Double along the way as one takes in the activities at the Winternationals. Image Credit: Edmund Jenks (2023)

Say Y.E.S. to the NHRA

I spent Friday, March 31 at the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals in Pomona, California as part of the NHRA’s Y.E.S. (Youth & Education Services) Program.
----
My role, beyond photographing the activities and being my usual Editorial Irritant, was assisting one of the student groups, Parkway Ford Heritage Mission (https://parkwaymission.org/), that participated in the YES activities.

FORD Motor Co. Follow & Win awareness booth. Image Credit: John Dinkel (2023)

As part of the Parkway Ford Heritage Mission apprenticeship and spirituality program, students learn skills such as how to bend, cut, grind and weld metal, working in a shop along side real life race cars. So, YES, students learn how to go fast with God.

Heritage Mission founder, Jack Burns, knows of what he teaches. He’s the founder of Burns Stainless, one of the premier engine header fabricators in the country. You’ll find Jack’s headers in most every known racing series: NHRA, IMSA, SCCA, IndyCar . . . and more.

So when I refer to Mr. Burns as a”complete fabrication,” what can he say, he knows I’m telling the truth.

Jack’s in the process of rebuilding a Pro Comp Ford Mustang, which will have a very trick motor, and I’ve promised not to let the pistons out of the bag until Jack is ready to unleash his unfair advantage on his unsuspecting competitors.

So . . . you’ve been warned!

The speakers at the Winternationals YES program included representatives from Mac Tools, Gerber Collision & Glass, the US Air Force and Bob Tasca III representing Ford Motor Company.

For those of you who have just moved here from another planet, Bob is a third-generation Ford dealer with a home base in Rhode Island.

Funny Car Driver Bob Tasca III. Image Credit: John Dinkel (2023)

Bob Senior wanted Ford to get involved with NHRA drag racing in the 1960s and used a letter writing campaign by his customers and other friends to catch Henry Ford II’s attention.

Of course, the Cobra Jet 428 engine Bob Sr. and his dealership team built from parts found in the Ford service parts catalog didn’t hurt. Especially when Tasca’s Mustang Cobra Jet race cars were blowing the doors off the competition at the drag strip.

Tasca Sr. coined the phrase, "Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday,” had a major influence on improving Ford’s durability and reliability, and was a driving force behind the “Quality is Job 1” initiative.
Today, Bob Tasca III continues his grandfather’s legacy.

Photo Courtesty Bob Tasca Racing (2023)

Bob races one of the baddest and fastest Ford Mustang Funny Cars (https://www.tascaracing.com) on this or any other planet. And he is a great representative for Ford, for kids, for racing and for education. Everyone needs to spend a few “motorvating” minutes listening to Bob explaining in simple terms the connections among education, setting goals and planning to achieve those goals.

Ford’s involvement in the YES program also included the opportunity for students to talk to several dealer training reps from area Ford dealers.

After this “schooling,” I took a small group of the Parkway Ford Heritage Mission students, instructors and parents over to Bob Tasca’s paddock trailer for a look-see. A big ”thank you” to all of Bob’s crew who took time out of their busy schedules to chat with our group and give them a close-up look at what goes on behind the scenes of a successful racing program, including a tour of Bob’s car and his motorhome/work shop inner sanctum.

It was a day they will long remember as they explore education pathways and post graduation career opportunities.

The rest of the day was spent grabbing burgers at In-and-Out, checking out the NHRA Summit Racing Jr. Dragsters, which are half-scale versions of Top Fuel dragsters offering kids ages 5-17 the opportunity to experience the thrill of drag racing in a controlled environment, watching practice and qualifying runs, and standing close enough to the starting line to feel the thunder from Tasca’s Funny Car punching you in the stomach.

A great day for learning about earning, the importance of schooling and goal setting, and having fun around drag racing and drag racers.

Can’t think of anything better. . .

And don’t forget, this is drag racing where Funny Cars like Bob Tasca’s Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Mustang cover 1000 feet in less than 4 seconds at more than 325 mph. This is about 1000 miles in around five hours, give or take a burnout!  If you’re living within a 1000-mile radius of Pomona, you’ve still got time to make the Finals on Sunday, April 2.

So step on it!

The NHRA Y.E.S. Program will be a part of most all of the NHRA Drag Racing Events throughout the rest of the year - check listings for your own 2023 event location and take part.

Future Of Transportation As Articulated By Frank Stephenson Captured By 2025AD

Speaking to 2025AD - The Autonomous Driving Community powered by Continental, Art Center College of Design trained and world renowned designer Frank Stephenson highlights his ideal way of getting from A to B, the future of vehicle interiors and of course, our move towards autonomous vehicles.

One of the world’s most successful and prolific automotive designers, Frank Stephenson has created some of the most instantly recognisable cars out there, ranging from the ubiquitous (Fiat 500, BMW X5, New Mini) to the unique (McLaren P1, Lilium flying taxi.)

For many, creating something iconic is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, based on hard work, good timing, and the right conditions. For Frank Stephenson, whose work creating icons has come seemingly naturally, is now turning his attention away from the car design world and towards the future of transportation.

"Chasing Perfect" is a bio-documentary that gives one insight into the complex world of designing for the masses while maintaining the integrity found in the definition of perfect. Find out more of what influences drive and inspires the designer behind what gets us around and surrounds us with space that speaks to our mobility & stylistic needs.

CES 2020 - THE GLOBAL STAGE FOR INNOVATION

CES is the world's gathering place for all those who thrive on the business of consumer technologies. It has served as the proving ground for innovators and breakthrough technologies for 50 years — the global stage where next-generation innovations are introduced to the marketplace.

Owned and produced by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA)®, it attracts the world's business leaders and pioneering thinkers.

Future-Focused Automakers Turning to Startups

CES 2020 cemented its role as the most important show for automotive technology, with a handful of new car introductions (and re-introductions) plus lots of standalone technologies this week. Most US auto shows other than perhaps LA don’t generate a critical mass of tech-oriented auto company people, analysts, and journalists. CES certainly did.

HIGHLIGHT:

Automakers are preparing for the future of mobility by investing in and partnering with all sorts of technology and mobility-focused startups, which allows them to expand their knowledge, capability and expertise to remain relevant in an industry on the verge of massive transformation.

Some might snicker when Byton CEO Daniel Kircher called the M-Byte EV “the first smart device on wheels,” but not the people attending this show. Of the vehicle introductions and concept cars, all were electrified – EVs or plug-in hybrids – with no gas-engine-only vehicles introduced.

Enjoy this visual overview gathered on an overnight boomerang run from Los Angeles to Las Vegas Wednesday January 7th and Thursday January 8th, 2020. What a way to begin a year of exciting possibilities.

Lessons Learned In The Needs-Satisfaction World Of "Chasing Perfect"

Lessons Learned In The Needs-Satisfaction World Of "Chasing Perfect"
The first half in a life lived as a motorcycle competitor, artist, pursuer of nature, perfectionist and ... mobility solutions designer, Frank Stephenson.

"Chasing Perfect" is a documentary style film production by Salon Pictures and Lionsgate UK that is a biographical look behind the curtain of the creative and commercially productive life of Casablanca born, Frank Stephenson.

So, just who is this man who was placed into our everyday mobility consciousness?

Listing of the documentary that Salon Pictures, with a distribution partnership through Lionsgate, found as the working title of an active project on the Salon Pictures website. Image Credit: Salon Pictures (2018)

Many people are not aware, but they are met with Stephenson designed solutions when outside of their homes through the traveling designs of the Ford Escort, the BMW X5, the re-birth of the MINI, the modern version of the Fiat 500, as well as the establishment of McLaren in the world of (can this be said?) everyday drive and affordable supercar - a calculation most supercar creators and purveyors do not consider when they create a near 200mph, or better, transportation solution that is meant to be reliably driven (as opposed to being tinkered with in the tune-up shop) everyday.

To label Frank as an artist minimizes the totality of what evolves through the many influences and points of information designer Stephenson has to consider and digest before he is given a target assignment objective and places a drawing instrument to a sheet of paper.

Caught in the act of enjoying pursuits of perfection in the McLaren presentation space along the 18th Fairway at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance - Frank and his wife, partner, best friend, co-pilot of "Riverbreeze", and co-lover of Bernese Shepherds, Linda Stephenson. Image Credit: Edmund Jenks (2016)

This documentary evolves into an enticing study in the life of an eternally young man who understands that perfection is elusive but for one convergent moment, achievable, given that ultimately, what's produced has to deliver its desired effect, one customer at a time.

This is the very reason why anyone who engages in pursuits that are designed to hit their target, be it a grocer, a lawyer, a boat builder, a healthcare specialist, a government services employee, a salesman, a teacher, a small business owner, or even a CEO would benefit from sitting down and investing an hour and thirty-one minutes experiencing "Chasing Perfect" with one who is never satisfied ... even when the project is over.

These viewing minutes will deliver many lessons when one wishes to become competent at chasing the concept of perfection throughout one's life.
